Born December 2, 1930 in Dubuque, Iowa to Jess W. and Mabel L. (Cripe) Mills, she married Thomas James Williams on February 14, 1952 in Dubuque, Iowa. He died January 12, 1987. She was also preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Phyllis Vanderlippe and Patricia Scott.
Surviving are three children, Laura (Robert “Bob”) Letts of Bartlett, Jeffrey (Linda) Williams of East Peoria, and Gayle Williams of Pekin, whom she made her home with; four grandchildren, Megan (Tom Kovachek) Letts of Virgil, Michael (Melissa) Letts of Aurora, Nicholas Williams of Peoria Heights, and Ryan (Jenni) Williams of North Pekin; ten great-grandchildren, Caden, Raegan, Brynn, Nicolette, Corrinna, Wrigley, Arianna, Nola Sue, Brixen, and Dexter; one brother, Dennis (Karen) Mills of East Peoria; and Gayle’s dog, Chico.
Shirley worked at Illinois Central College in East Peoria in the Placement Testing Department for over 20 years. Previously, she worked at Mel-o-Cream in Creve Coeur and Family Video in East Peoria.
She was a former member of First United Methodist Church in East Peoria.
Shirley was an avid reader and enjoyed crafts and watching Westerns, Gunsmoke, and classic television shows. She also enjoyed working Sudoku’s and coloring on her IPad.
Her memorial service will be at noon Saturday, May 18, 2024 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory, 405 Rusche Avenue, Creve Coeur, Illinois. 61610. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 18, 2024 at Lutheran Cemetery in Peoria.
