Born on May 26, 1945, to John and Florence (Boyer) Ruth, Vernon grew up with a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for the land that would shape the course of his life.
Vernon proudly served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, a period that carried him far beyond the Illinois fields he called home. His service brought him to San Francisco, San Diego, Vietnam, Guam, Japan, as well as other destinations that remained meaningful to him throughout his life.
After completing his military service, Vernon returned to the work he loved most: farming. He was a proud and hard working steward of the land, devoted to caring for the earth and honoring the farming traditions he valued. His dedication to agriculture was both his livelihood and a reflection of his character.
Vernon had a lifelong love of history and trains, often spending time reminiscing with friends and family. Though a homebody at heart, he enjoyed trips across the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Panama Canal, New Zealand, and Australia, where he collected memories that enriched his life.
He is survived by his daughter, Lisa (Brent) Lacey and two grandchildren, Riley and Cassidy Lacey, all of San Diego, CA; and one sister, Sandra (Darwin) Klingenberg of Arkansas.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Marlene Youle.
A private ceremony with family members will take place on a later date in Rock Island National Cemetery. Cremation Rites have been accorded by Preston Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin.
Memorial contributions may be made in Vernon’s honor to Freedom Paws Service Dog Foundation, located in Chillicothe, IL, or Prairie Cardiovascular with multiple locations in Illinois. Links listed below.
