Alyson Gully joined her Savior in Heaven on December 22, 2025. Her life was founded upon her relationship with Jesus Christ and her unwavering commitment to His truth. She was the second daughter of Hugh and Jean Humphrey. Born in Birmingham, she resided there throughout her life. Alyson was a graduate of Shades Valley High School and went on to earn a degree from Auburn University. Although she was a distinguished student, her greatest gift from her time at Shades Valley and Auburn University was the friendships she made along the way. Alyson had a unique ability to draw people in with her infectious personality, and the friendships she formed early in life endured throughout her lifetime.
Upon graduating from Auburn University, she returned to Birmingham and began a career in the finance industry. She met her husband, Timothy (Tim) Gully, in the fall of 1985 during an aerobics class at Shades Mountain Baptist Church. Tim often joked that he joined the class to get in shape, but ended up finding a wife instead. They were married at that same church on April 1, 1989.
Alyson’s true “career” began on February 21, 1992, with the birth of their first of three boys. She had always desired a family of boys, and she was blessed with exactly that. She was a faithful wife and mother to the four boys the Lord entrusted to her. She left her career in finance to stay at home with her first son and never returned to the workforce. The Lord made Alyson to raise those boys, and she did so with grace and dedication every step of the way. She homeschooled each of her sons during their early elementary years before sending them off to school. Alyson was a close confidant to each of her children and remained a steadfast rock they could lean on throughout their lives.
In February 2010, Alyson was diagnosed with breast cancer and began a difficult battle against the disease. Where many might have been discouraged or had their faith weakened, Alyson used this challenge as a testament to the Lord’s goodness and faithfulness in all seasons of life. She fought hard throughout that year and went into remission the following year. The remainder of her life was spent praying for and supporting women undergoing similar journeys. She was the true definition of a prayer warrior. If Alyson said she would pray for you, she meant it and always followed through. She had a compassionate heart for those experiencing pain and suffering and would do everything she could to meet them in their sadness so they could feel the love of Jesus.
As much as Alyson loved raising her three sons, she had the time of her life loving on her grandchildren when she and Tim welcomed their first two in 2023. They called her “Happy,” a fitting name, as she was the happiest she could be when around them. She loved nothing more than being with those young children and watching her sons and daughters-in-law raise them. Alyson and Tim had two more grandchildren born in 2025, and she spent much of her time with Tim babysitting them. It was often a topic of discussion between her two sons about who had Happy and Pop during various parts of the week. Her favorite thing to do on this earth was go to the beach, unless that meant giving up an opportunity to spend time with her grandchildren and make them smile!
Alyson left a legacy of loving your neighbor as yourself. Whether it was her husband, sons, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, friends, or church community, she was always the first to volunteer and eager to serve. There was never a day in her life when she was not devoted to Christ, and her family will continue to honor that legacy.
Her husband, Tim, was her rock and lovingly cared for her throughout her life. Whenever she had the opportunity to introduce him, she would say, “this is my knight in shining armor.” Together, they embodied what God intended marriage to be, serving each other faithfully throughout their years together. She is survived by Tim and their children, Wynston (Haley), Holden (Sellers), and Steadman. She has four grandchildren: Rhodes, Wynne, Graham, and Shepherd.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at The Chapel at Grants Mill Campus of Church of the Highlands, 4700 Highlands Way, Irondale, Alabama 35210, with visitation beginning at 12:00 p.m.
In lieu of gifts, contributions honoring the life of Alyson Gully may be made to the Scott Dawson Evangelistic Association, 210 Wildwood Parkway, Ste 200, Birmingham, AL 35209.
