The family will greet friends one hour before the 2 p.m. funeral on Sunday, December 1, 2013 at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Alabama. Rev. Thomas Joseph, Senior Pastor, Lake Crest Presbyterian Church will preside.
"Mama Ann," as her loved ones called her, was the extraordinary wife to W.C. Stegall, Sr., eldest daughter of George L. Welden Sr., and Susie Ella Thompson Welden, and sister to James Welden (Lucy), George L. Welden Jr., Charles Welden (Dorothy) and Lewis Welden (Becky) all of whom preceded her in death.
Mama Ann was born in Senoia, Georgia. She was a graduate of Brantley Institute, Reinhardt Junior College and Crawford Long School of Nursing. She married "Stegall" (as she called him) in 1946 and they lived in Clemson, South Carolina, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Bloomington, New Jersey before settling in Birmingham in 1948. Besides raising four children, assisting her husband in business and traveling all over the world, she fully embraced, encompassed and promoted life, love and faith by her volunteer efforts with organizations too numerous to name.
Mama Ann was the fantastic and ever-dutiful mother to: William "Bill" C. Stegall Jr. (Mary), Leigh Ann Young (Bert), David Stegall (Deborah) and Frank Stegall (Sandra). A caring grandmother to: Sarah Squires (K.C.), William "Will" C. Stegall III (Jenny), Emalee Holmes (Mark), Mary Beth Ely (David), Frank Young (Liz), Jessica Morris (Zach), Caleb Young, Hillary Gamble (Peter), Hagen Stegall (Dan Baker), George Stegall (Brittany), Grace Stegall, Spencer Stegall, Shelby Franks (Mark), Taylor Stegall and Matt Stegall; and a loving great-grandmother to: Annie Stegall, William C. Stegall IV, Jeb Stegall, Henry Stegall, Elle Squires, Evelyn Squires, Aubrey Squires, Alice Holmes, Sawyer Holmes, Caroline Ely, Elizabeth Joy Ely, Anna Helen Ely, Julia Morris, Cecilia Morris, Pierce Gamble, Adelaide Gamble, Bradley Stegall and Andrew Michael Franks. Mama Ann is also survived by her three sisters, Sue Williams, Mary Brown and Kathryn "Callie" Weldon, and her beloved sister-in-law, Elizabeth Welden and brother-in-law, Ruben Williams, all living in or around greater Atlanta, Georgia.
Mama Ann so appreciated everyone who assisted her at St. Martin's in the Pines, Galleria Woods and all of her other outstanding caregivers. She loved being a recipient of the Flower Ministry of Briarwood Presbyterian Church for many years.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to First Teachers @ Home, 505 20th Street North, Suite 1015, Birmingham, AL 35203.
