

STEPHENS, BARRY C. 62, died Wednesday, July 25, of multiple myeloma. He was a native of Birmingham and a resident of Bowling Green, Ky. He grew up in the Sandusky community, son of the late Andrew C. and Virginia Stephens. Survivors include a son, Matthew "Chad" Stephens and his mother, Sylvia Lynn Dietrich, both of Bowling Green; sister, Celia S. (Bob) Rainey of Birmingham; and brother Glenn A. (Martha) Stephens of Florence, Ala. Barry was an avid sports car enthusiast, and for many years was a driving instructor for the Porsche Club of America and participant in numerous racing events sponsored by the Sports Car Club of America. Other lifelong interests include travel, hiking and photography. He was a 1972 graduate of the University of North Alabama with majors in sociology and geography and held the Ph.D. in counselor education from Mississippi State University and the Ed.D. in rehabilitation counseling from the University of Alabama. Credentials include national certification in rehabilitation counseling, licensed professional counselor, certification in gerontology and in deafness. He had more than 35 years of counseling practice; taught full time for 14 years in counselor education programs at the University of Alabama, UAB and Lindsey Wilson College in Bowling Green; and served 11 years as adjunct instructor while a practitioner, with appointments at Florida State University, Auburn University and Mississippi State University. He was a member of the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, Association for Specialists in Group Work, Association for Adult Development Aging, Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind, and American Rehabilitation Counseling Association.
