

Charles Roy Herrin, age 98, of Hoover, Alabama passed away on May 22nd, 2026. He was born in Ponca City, Oklahoma on January 16, 1928 to the late Walter L. Herrin and Amy Genevieve Herrin. Upon graduation from Shawnee High School, Oklahoma, he enlisted in the U.S. Army 1st Cavalry and served in Japan during World War II. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a B.S. degree. He had a great love of God and family.
Charles married Patricia Louise Hickey on May 14, 1954 in Shawnee Oklahoma, and they were married for 59 years. He was employed by Travelers Insurance Company in various management positions in Oklahoma City, Houston Texas, and Birmingham Alabama. He retired after 37 years and was then employed by Premium Financing Specialists, where he worked for 15 years.
He enjoyed reading, traveling, golf, fishing, ping pong, badminton, basketball, and bowling. He spent much of his time with his sons coaching baseball, football, and basketball. His favorite time was playing quarterback for the evening football games with his sons and other neighborhood boys along with playing in pickup games of basketball with his boys. He was always ready for a badminton game in the afternoon. His day to day actions sparked the interest of his sons in insurance and construction where two had great success in insurance and another in construction. With his daughter, he enjoyed traveling and exploring the history of places they traveled, which inspired her to become a history teacher.
He was the past President of Friendship Force Birmingham Chapter. Charles traveled to over 70 countries with his wife, friends, and family. He was the past President of the Blue Goose of Alabama. Charles and his wife volunteered many hours to various organizations and was a charter member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Hoover, Alabama.
Charles is preceded in death by his wife Patricia Herrin; his parents Walter and Genevieve Herrin; his brothers Walter Herrin (Caroline) and Richard Herrin (Norma). He is survived by his five children: Chris Herrin (Sandra), Blair Herrin, Brian Herrin (Jennifer), Craig Herrin (Sherry), and Patricia Tauber (Kevin). His nine grandchildren: Wendy Sharp (Bentley), Misty Doroh (Mark), Holly Atchley (Justin), Blake Herrin (Devon), Chad Herrin (Sara), Stone Herrin, Star Herrin, Jameson Herrin, and Sophie Tauber. His 11 great grandchildren: Jackson Davis, Tristan Davis, Charles Presley Sharp, Noah Doroh, Elizabeth Doroh, Amelia Doroh, Lilly Atchley, William Atchley, Beau Herrin, Briggs Herrin, and Easton Herrin. His siblings: Joann Smith (Bill), Frank Presson (Jackie), Terry Presson (Mary).
A memorial service for family and close friends will be held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church on Friday, May 29th at 1:00 pm with visitation in the chapel beginning at 12:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, please send memorial donations to St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Hoover, 2061 Patton Chapel Road.
