

David Lee Hairston, 77, passed away on Monday, February 10, 2025. Born on September 5, 1947, in Arkansas to James and Thelma Hairston, David was a devoted son, father, brother, and friend who touched the lives of many.
David received his early education at Shelby County School and Vincent High School before continuing his studies at Sandhills Community College in North Carolina. He was a proud member of North Shelby Baptist Church.
On August 15, 1981, David married Kathey Neely in Huntsville, Alabama. Together, they raised two children. David proudly served his country in the United States Army and was a proud Vietnam War Veteran where he served in the Tank Division. David was a hard worker, he retired in 2021 after working more than 30 years as a technician at Wayne's Pest Control.
David wore his military hat daily and never missed an opportunity to connect with fellow veterans. His commitment to service extended beyond his time in the Army, as he also served on multiple mission trips to Ukraine. Over the years, David traveled there nine times, where he helped build orphanages and touched the lives of many through his kindness and humility.
David was also a devoted grandfather, and his grandchildren—Collins (5), Scarlett (4), Declan (3), and Lillian (2)—were the light of his life.
He is survived by his children, Andrew Hairston and Katherine Raines; daughter-in-law, Brittney Hairston; ex-wife, Kathey Harthern; brothers, Jim (Margaret Ann), John, and George (Patti) Hairston; and his beloved grandchildren.
A visitation will be held at Southern Heritage Funeral Home on Monday, February 17, from 11:30 AM to 12:15 PM, followed by a service at 12:15 PM. Burial will take place at Alabama National Cemetery at 2:00 PM.
