SMITH, DONALD "DON" EUGENE, of Birmingham, Alabama passed away July 12, 2013. Visitation will be 10-11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home, 475 Cahaba Valley Road, Pelham, AL 35124. The funeral, also Tuesday, will begin at 11:30 a.m. in Southern Heritage Chapel, Pelham. Burial will follow in Southern Heritage Cemetery, Pelham. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675. Don was born in Plevna, KS on March 11, 1936 to Johny H. Smith and Agnes Catherine Brown Smith, who predeceased him. He was a graduate of Emporia State University and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He retired in 1998 after 37 years with State Farm Insurance Companies. Don was married for 51 years to Judith A. Smith, who resides in Birmingham. He is survived by three children: Daughter, Catherine Ann Smith of Birmingham, son, Gregory Eugene Smith (Monica) of Charlotte, NC, and daughter, Sandra Dawn Smith of Chelsea, AL. Don, affectionately known as "Pop-Pop," has seven grandchildren: Morgan Taylor Sawyer (Sara), Tyler Douglas Sawyer, William Gregory Smith Reed, and Jacob Blaine Seritt (deceased), all of Birmingham, and Kaitlin Marie Smith, Donald Alexander Smith and Ryan Gregory Smith of Charlotte. He was also blessed with two great-granddaughters: Morghin Lynn Sawyer and Olivia Riley Sawyer of Birmingham. We will always remember Don as a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. His family was his greatest joy. He was generous, loving, and caring to all. We will greatly miss him.
