HOVEY, DOUGLASS "DOUGIE" ANN WALSH, 64, of Birmingham, Alabama passed away Wednesday afternoon, April 25, 2012. She was born June 25, 1947 in Nashville, Tennessee and lived in Mt. Pleasant, Tennessee in her early years. The graduate of James Monroe High School and Radford College moved in 1961 to Fredericksburg, Virginia, her husband Robert's hometown, before relocating to the Birmingham area in 2008. "Dougie" enjoyed gardening, reading, taking walks, and helping others. She gave of herself endlessly and was pleased with her mother's nickname for her, "Care and Share." Family was a very important part of her life. First and foremost, she loved spending time with her husband Robert. Additionally, she cared for her nieces, nephews, and their children as if they were her own. Hearing stories of her grand-nieces and grand-nephews gave her much joy, as did sharing special occasions with them and all of her family. "Dougie" was preceded in death by her mother, Elizabeth M. Walsh. In addition to her husband Robert, survivors include three step-children, Bryan Hovey (Cathy) of Fredericksburg, Deborah Hovey Boutchyard (Chris) of Spotsylvania, Virginia, and Eric W. Hovey of King George, Virginia; twin sister, Margaret E. Walsh of Birmingham; brother, James F. Walsh (Peggy) of Birmingham; and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 12 noon until 1 p.m. on Monday, April 30, 2012 at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Alabama. Also on Monday, the graveside funeral service will be at 1 p.m. at Southern Heritage Cemetery, Pelham. Family and friends may offer tributes at Dougie's memorial page at www.southernheritagefunerals.com. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (namialabama.org).
