George was born in Haddonfield, NJ to Robert H. Lummis and Betty Kessler Lummis. He graduated from Haddonfield High School and then continued his education at Lehigh University. He graduated with a BS in Engineering and then he went to work for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Akron, Ohio.
On June 20, 1959, George married Kay Horter, who was also from Haddonfield. They started their family in Akron, Ohio and raised three children, Debbie, Amy and Greg. The family moved with Goodyear to several plants in Ohio, then to North Chicago and subsequently to Gadsden, AL where they finished raising their children through their high school years. Then George and Kay moved to Toronto, Canada.
George finished his career with Goodyear in Akron, Ohio as the Director of Industrial Relations, North America and retired in September of 1991 to pursue his bucket list of places he wanted to experience. The list was inspired by a view-master that was given to him as a child while he was recovering from polio. Together, George and Kay traveled to 49 of the 50 states in the US and traveled outside the US to South America, Asia, Africa, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and the Caribbean.
George loved his family and took comfort in the fact that his children are God loving and hardworking. The family times he enjoyed most were the many camping trips with his wife and children during their time at home, along with annual trips to Haddonfield every Christmas to be with extended family. Once his children were grown, he enjoyed the annual beach trips to Destin, FL with his kids and grandchildren.
George’s other passion was the mission work he and Kay participated in as part of the Global Mission Team at Briarwood PCA. Their mission work took them to South Africa, Mexico and Peru, along with several places in the US, going to the Southwest to work with the Indians and to the Wycliff Bible Translation Institute to volunteer. George and Kay have been active with their Deeper Life Sunday class and participated in many senior activities as part of the Trailblazers at Briarwood. In addition to mission work, George enjoyed travel, photography, and golf.
George loved the Lord and he finished his life well. He taught his family and friends that commitment and a life truly surrendered to Jesus can transform a heart. His favorite verse was I Thessalonians 5:16,17 “Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.”
George was proceeded in death by his father, Robert H. Lummis and his mother, Betty Kessler Lummis and his brother Bob Lummis. He is survived by his wife, Kay Lummis of Birmingham, AL; his three children, Debbie Glover (John) of Spring Hill, TN, and Amy Curtis (Johnny) of Smithville, TX and Greg Lummis (Barbara) of Birmingham, AL.; his grandchildren Chris, Megan, Ryan, Reed, Shelby, Michael, Taylor, Katie, Reese and Rebecca and great grandchild Olivia; his sister-in-law Marilyn Lummis and his niece Susan Lummis.
