

Hilton Dennis Logan, age 90, departed this life, January 5, 2016 following a brief illness here in Birmingham, Alabama, and entered his heavenly home with his Savior and Lord, Jesus. He was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, September 25, 1925, and lived there until he enlisted in the U.S. Navy to serve his country during World War II. He returned home following the war to attend and graduate from The University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa. He met and soon married Jane Zeigler following his return from the war and while attending The University. Hilton and Jane were married in Fort Deposit, Alabama, on August 31, 1947 and enjoyed 63 years of marriage before her passing in 2011. Hilton Logan served in the South Pacific as an ordinance bombardier on a PMB5 mariner submarine hunter aircraft. He received a distinguished service medal for his participation in the rescue of sailors from the torpedoed USS Indianapolis. He re-entered the service after college graduation to serve in the U.S. Air Force Reserves where he attained the rank of Major. His business career was spent primarily as a VP of Sales with Builder’s Manufacturing, Leeds, Alabama. Builder’s Manufacturing was a manufacturer of commercial and industrial steel doors and frames. Not only Jane Zeigler Logan has preceded him in death, but also Hilton’s parents, Edward D. Logan and Sadie Bell (Wood) Logan, his sister, Allie Christine (Logan) Martin, and his brothers, Elias Wood (Dub) Logan and Col. Edward Oneal Logan. Hilton Dennis Logan was a focused leader full of wisdom, a confidential counselor, and exemplary mentor to many people over the years. He was benevolent beyond words. He loved His Lord, his wife, and his family very much. He was a Sunday school teacher of the Word of God for 55 years at Shades Mountain Baptist Church. He taught adult men for many years before teaching single adults and married couples with his wife, Jane. They were a team in everything they endeavored. In addition to teaching, he served as administrator, deacon, and finance committee member over the years. While leaving a legacy to all the lives he touched, those left to cherish the memories of Hilton include his three children and their spouses: Vivian Logan (Bill) Elder of Montgomery, Yvonne Logan (Bill) Jenkins of Birmingham, and Alan Dennis (Elise Owen) Logan of Birmingham. His grandchildren are as follows: Laura Elder (Mike) Gogis of Zionsville, Indiana, Lacey Elder (Andrew) Montgomery also of Zionsville, Paige Jenkins (Michael) Kopecky of Hampton Cove, Alabama, Brent (Marianne Clancy) Jenkins of Homewood, Matthew (Kasey Beers) Jenkins of Birmingham, Jonathan (Katie Devaney) Logan of Birmingham, Daniel Logan, Jordan, Logan and Lucy Grace Logan, all of Birmingham. He leaves behind 10 great-grandchildren. A private family graveside will be held a couple hours prior to the Memorial Service to be conducted by Dr. Charles T. Carter at noon on Friday, January 8th in The Conference Center at Shades Mountain Baptist Church, Birmingham. In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates memorials made in honor of Hilton Dennis Logan to either Shades Mountain Baptist Church, 2017 Columbiana Road, Vestavia Hills, AL 35216 or to Lifeline Children’s Service, 2104 Rocky Ridge Road, Birmingham, AL 35216. Lifeline is an orphan care, adoption, and foster care ministry seeking to give children a hope and a future. The family would like to thank Saint Vincent’s Hospital and their Emergency and ICU divisions for their attentive care while a patient. Also, they would like to thank Saint Vincent’s Hospice and Mary Quicksey for their care upon returning home. A very special thanks goes to Sandy Bergeron and Cheryl McKnight for the special care they gave tirelessly over the past 5 years.
