It is with deep sorrow that the family of James Carr announces his passing at the age of 67 on December 23, 2025 in Birmingham, Alabama. He was surrounded by his family as he left this life to join His Lord and Savior in the next life.
James was born on June 18, 1958 in Montgomery, Alabama. He was the middle child of Reeves and Dian Carr. He graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Montgomery, Alabama and went on to earn his Bachelors in Music and Masters in Music Education from the University of Montevallo in Montevallo, Alabama.
It was at the University of Montevallo that James met his wife Kristy. They were married in 1986 at the University of Montevallo and enjoyed nearly 40 years of marriage. They raised two daughters, Kerrie and Julie. James was a faithful, loving husband and exceptional, devoted father.
James’ relationship with Jesus Christ defined how he lived his life. He personified what it means to die to self, take up your cross and follow Jesus. He was not ashamed of the gospel and was privileged to share the joy of Christ as he went along his way in this life.
James communicated best with the world around him by listening to, composing, performing and teaching music. In high school he played the tuba in the band. During his Masters’ program he learned how to play nearly every instrument, but he most enjoyed playing the tuba, piano, bass guitar, and electronic synthesizers. Over the years he wrote countless scores of music and loved to please audiences with his practiced and improvised synthesizer performances in the band, Modular Units of the Analog Domain (MUAD).
If James was not playing or composing music in his free time, he was woodworking, tenderly caring for his assortment of plants, cutting and polishing gems, watching movies, or spending time with family and friends.
James’ professional life centered around music and videography. Over the course of his career, he worked as a band director, music minister, professional videographer and adjunct university faculty. He ended his career doing audio/visual, marketing, and videography work at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing.
James’ sheer delight over the past two and a half years has been his role as “Papa” to his granddaughter Mallie and new grandson Dean.
James is survived by his wife, Kristy; sister, Debbie Frederick of Montgomery, Alabama; daughters, Kerrie (Jared) Keesee of Huntsville, Alabama and Julie Carr of Birmingham, Alabama; granddaughter Mallie and grandson Dean of Huntsville, Alabama; and many nieces and nephews. James is preceded in death by his mother, father, and younger brother, Rusty.
A Celebration of Life service will be at Meadowbrook Baptist Church (4984 Meadow Brook Rd, Birmingham, AL 35242) on Saturday, January 3, 2026 at 1pm, followed by a visitation at the church from 2-3:30pm.
