Jim’s memory lives on through his wife of 52 years, Carol Ammons Dowdy, and his daughters Cameron Dowdy Thrasher (Jeremy) & Meredith Dowdy Vlahos (Stephen). Jim was blessed to get to enjoy time with his two little grandchildren who adored him.
Jim Dowdy had a good old-fashioned childhood in Montgomery, Alabama with siblings, Joan D. Mangina (Joe), Diane D. Flowers (Richmond), Connie Hartley (Andy - both deceased), and brother William Davis Dowdy. He graduated from Sidney Lanier High School where he met Carol, his high school sweetheart and partner for life. They attended Auburn University together where he received a degree in Industrial Engineering. Throughout the years, many beautiful memories were made on the plains.
Jim took over the family business started by his grandfather in 1936. He was loved by customers and employees alike because of his hardworking nature and genuine personality. It was easy to see that he poured his heart and soul into the company, and he stayed on as Chairman of the Board until his death. Dowdy and Associates remains a beloved family business, which is a legacy Jim held near and dear to his heart. To know Jim Dowdy was to love him. He was a man of great strength, and yet he was gentle, loving, and kind to all. He had an amazing ability to make each person in a room feel appreciated and heard. He didn’t have to say much, you could see the sincerity in his big blue eyes.
Jim was also a man of unique talents and varied interests which included painting, wood carving, drumming, collecting exotic fish, telling “punny” jokes, porch-rocking at the lake, gazing at a beautiful sunset, tailgating, simple moments shared with family, and of course, Auburn football. He was a joy to be around, and his presence will be sorely missed.
Jim will always be remembered as a loving father, husband, boss, hero, mentor, and friend.
In lieu of a traditional funeral, the family will be hosting a private celebration of life in November.
Jim’s charitable donations were wide and varied. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity that tugs at your own heart. He would have loved to help support your chosen cause.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.southernheritagefunerals.com for the Dowdy family. Thank you so much for your love and support during this difficult time.
