EN EL CUIDADO DE

Southern Heritage Funeral Home & Cemetery

Dr. James Benton Franks passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family on Friday evening, June 29, 2018 at the age of 79. He was the oldest of four children raised by Dorothy Nell and James Maxwell Franks.

James graduated from Ensley High School, Class of 1957 before attending Birmingham Southern and the University of Alabama School of Dentistry, graduating in 1965. He served his country as a Captain in the Army Dental Corps from 1966 to 1968.

Following his military service, James went on to serve his community while opening the Midfield, Roebuck and Riverchase Dental Centers. After retiring from dentistry, he took great pleasure living life and traveling with Deborah, his loving wife of 34 years. Together they enjoyed many adventures including sailing the Caribbean, elk hunting in the Idaho wilderness, and building a home and living in Mexico.

James especially loved family beach vacations on the Gulf with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed numerous hobbies including bluewater sailing, golf, Crimson Tide football, and creating beautiful furniture and art pieces through woodturning.

James was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, James Branyon, Jr.; and granddaughter, Kelsey Leigh Hazouri.

Survivors include James's wife, Deborah Church Franks; and four daughters, Lynn Houghaboom (Gregg), Sharon Hazouri (David), Debra Hughes, and Stephanie Matthews (David); one son, Jon Canada; 11 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; brother, Charles Franks (Gail); and sisters, Jenny Redden (Ben) and Susan Sieweke (John).

James was a strong, amazing patriarch and will be terribly missed by those who knew him best and loved him the most.

A special thank you to CJFS Cares, Pam, Lisa, and the many wonderful volunteers. We appreciate the compassionate care and genuine kindness provided by Oasis Hospice extended to James and his family during this difficult time.

There will be a private family graveside service.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to the Lewy Body Dementia Association (www.lbda.org).
