

James O. Smith, 95 of Birmingham, passed away on Sunday, May 8, 2016. Mr. Smith was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was a WWII veteran in the Pacific Theater, Sergeant, 7th Army, Air Force. He served 34 months overseas with the last post in Saipan. He loved gardening and was a master gardener. Mr. Smith retired after 30 years from Kimberly-Clark Corporation. He loved the Lord and his church, Indian Springs First Baptist Church. The loves of his life were “Jessie,” children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. James and Jessie were married for 73 years.
Mr. Smith is preceded in death by his son, Terry Smith; parents, Leavy and S.L. Smith; brother, Lloyd Smith; and sister, Ruby Thompson. He is survived by his wife, Jessie Bailey Smith; daughter, Deborah Ross (Jim); son, Stewart Smith (Rita); daughter-in-law, Georgia; brother, Wilburn Smith; grandchildren, Tracie Henderson (Scott), Jay Shaw (Allison), Casey Smith (Jennifer), Kelley Brasher (Todd), Sarah Smith and Rachel Buie (Will); and great grandchildren, Julia Henderson, Noah Henderson, Elle Shaw, Caroline Shaw, and Evelyn Buie.
The celebration of Mr. Smith’s life will be at 1pm on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, with burial following at Mt. Hebron Cemetery in Leeds. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Indian Springs First Baptist Church Memorial Fund.
