

BELL, JERRY VERNON 68, passed away on January 27, 2011 in Birmingham, AL. In l942, Bell was born in Bessemer, AL to parents Joe Powell Bell, Sr. and Verna Mae Chapman. As a graduate of the University of Alabama and Harvard Management School, Bell was voted Young Engineer of the Year in l975, leading the way to a flourishing career as a Professional Mining Engr. and Licensed Land Surveyor in Alabama. During college, Bell was a co-op at U. S. Steel and Woodward Iron. Post graduation, he held positions including: Sr. Mining Engr. and Chief Mining Engr. at Woodward; Chief Mining Engr. at Mead Metals & Minerals; Vice President of Engineering & Development and Asst. General Manager-Coal at Mead Coal; Sr. Vice President of Operations & Engineering at Mulga Coal Company; Executive Vice President at Coal Systems, Inc.; General Manager of Brilliant Coal Company; Sr. Engr. at P.E. LaMoreaux & Associates; Sr. Engr. Environmental Mgmt. & Engineering, Inc.; Sr. Engr. at ATEC Associates; Principal with Environmental Services & Solutions; Asst. Service Mgr. at Hoover Chrysler-Plymouth; Sales & Leasing Consultant at Ivan Leonard and Susan Schein Chevrolet; Sales Rep. & Commercial Rep. and Home Landscaping Manager at TruGreen. Bell enjoyed traveling, attending sporting events at the University of Alabama (Roll Tide!) and spending time with family while relaxing at Logan Martin Lake. He is survived by his sons Brian Bell (Rachel); Steven Bell (Kimberli); Marcus Bell (Samantha); and stepchildren Kathy Sanders (Sandra); and Jeff Brown. He is also survived by the love of his life and sweetheart of 18 years, G. Anne Hobbs. Bell is also survived by his brother, Joe Powell Bell, Jr. (Celeste); and his grandchildren: Dylan Bell; Lauren McCullough; Nikola McCullough; Brooke McCullough; Charlie Sanders; Logan Sanders; Magan Brown; Jacob Brown; Alden Brown; and Jacob Camla. Jerry's strength and sense of humor will be missed by all who knew and loved him. His pets Bit, Ginger, Smokey and Peaches will also miss his tender kindness and companionship. Visitation and memorial services will be held Saturday February 5, 2011 at Southern Heritage Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. with memorial services to follow at 11:00 a.m..
