

DWYER, JOHN D. "JACK," 85, of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away Wednesday morning, August 8, 2012. The Greenville, Ohio native graduated from Joliet Catholic High School in 1944. Post high school graduation, he served two years in the U.S. Navy. At the University of Illinois, he was inducted into Pi Tau Sigma national honorary mechanical engineering society and graduated with highest honors Tau Beta Pi in mechanical engineering. Jack's construction aggregate career included work with Material Service Company, Hillside Stone, and Vulcan Materials Company. He was also a consultant with Broadess Engineering. He was recognized throughout the aggregate community as an industry leader in the design and production of aggregate facilities. He was influential in Vulcan's entrance and success in the Saudi Arabia and Mexico markets. Jack was an active member of St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church in Birmingham and Vestavia Country Club. He was a philanthropist, avid reader, Auburn football fan, and yardwork enthusiast. He and his wife, "Peg," have been active in the Danberry Retirement community. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Denis and Cora Dwyer, and sister, Germaine Dwyer Curran. Survivors include Jack's wife of 59 years, the former Margaret Ann Maher; children, Marianne Dwyer Truss (John), Patrick Dwyer (Lea), and Timothy Dwyer (Julianne); grandchildren, Michael Truss, Mary Catherine Truss, Devin Dwyer, Blake Dwyer, Peyton Dwyer, Brayden Dwyer, James Dwyer, Mary Kate Dwyer, Andrew Dwyer, and Jack Dwyer; and brother, Joseph Dwyer. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Monday, August 13, 2012 at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church, Birmingham. The Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. the same day at the church. The graveside service will follow at Southern Heritage Cemetery in Pelham, Alabama. After the burial, the family will host a reception at Danberry at Inverness. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church, 7340 Cahaba Valley Road, Birmingham, AL 35242.
