May Baugh Griffin passed through this earthly life on Thursday, November 12, 2015 at Brookwood Hospital. She was the loving and dedicated wife of Louis Griffin Jr., who pre-deceased her on March 4, 2006.
Having lived in Vestavia Hills, AL for 48 years, she and her husband were well-known as kind and generous supporters of many local charities and who volunteered their time and energy to organizations including St. Peters Catholic Church, Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church and The Bell Center for Early Intervention. May often used her master sewing skills to make gowns for preemie babies in local hospitals.
Being the spouse of a South Central Bell employee and later retiree, May and Lou were very active in “Telephone Pioneers” events, where Lou often entertained audiences with his band and trumpet, beautiful singing voice and enormous musical talent. Acting perhaps for fun and camaraderie, they and friends also formed a small, local social group they fondly called the, “Do Nothing Club.” Lou also volunteered for many years to teach newcomers in the Vulcan Power Squadron’s Safe Boating Course and May always assisted and supported him.
May is perhaps best remembered for her professionalism and dedication to her lifelong vocation as an RN. Both she and her identical twin sister, Mabel Bryan, graduated from Georgia Baptist Hospital’s nursing school in Atlanta. It was during one of May’s early nursing assignments that she met Lou, whom she married in July, 1946. May and Lou were truly devoted to each other and their children for all of their 60 years together.
Her long career of nursing assignments included work at Georgia Tech Infirmary, Atlanta, GA; the Protestant Home for Babies, New Orleans, LA and other assignments. In her final work responsibility she was Director of Nursing for the Mary Lewis Convalescent Center in Birmingham, AL, a position she held for 20 years. After his retirement from South Central Bell, Lou joined May working at the Mary Lewis facility, as Business Administrator, until they both retired from the facility, which was acquired by UAB Hospital.
May Griffin is survived by four children, Cecile Griffin Stretch (Terry), of Atlanta, GA; Teresa Griffin Holland (Len), of Birmingham, AL; Annette Griffin Drake (Greg), of Shokan, NY and Bill Griffin (Anna Lynn), of Birmingham, AL. She also is survived by ten (10) grandchildren including Teresa Norek, Brian Stretch, Emily Kranz, Daniel Stretch, Russell Drake, William Griffin, Sean Griffin, Lisa Mooresmith, Griffin Holland and Katie Issis, as well as nine (9) great grandchildren, both present or on the way.
Graveside services for our beloved MaMay will be held in Atlanta, GA on Saturday.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions might be sent to The Bell Center for Early Intervention in Birmingham, AL or to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN.
“We will hold in our hearts the memories of two lives together lived in love for one another and in caring for others.”
