Michael Allen Fontaine, 80, of Columbiana, Alabama, died peacefully surrounded by family on January 28, 2025. Michael was born in Montgomery, Alabama, on December 12, 1944. He is survived by his beloved wife of over 30 years, Sandra P. Fontaine, son Michael Allen Fontaine, II (BJ), daughter Michelle Mihalik (Dave), stepson Scott Smith, stepdaughter Ashley White (Philip), and grandson Michael Allen Fontaine, III. He also leaves a few special, life-long friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, John Michael and Nan Fontaine of Montgomery, Alabama and his brothers John Fontaine and Terry Fontaine.
Michael was raised in Montgomery, Alabama. He graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1961 and continued his education at Auburn University, where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Business in 1969. Michael worked for Rust Engineering for several years before entering the residential construction industry. Michael built many custom homes in the Birmingham Metropolitan area throughout his career. He was an avid woodworker building beautiful furniture and high-end cabinetry.
Michael was an admirer of fast cars and beautiful women as evidence of his girls in his family. In all seriousness, the Fontaine brothers were well known for drag racing up and down Spiegel Street and all over Montgomery. One thing about Michael is he loved his entire family. The McElvy uncles were particularly loved and helped to form his jovial personality. He inherited the ability to “pester“ from those uncles as well as the gift of gab. Michael was an incredible storyteller. He loved to make everyone laugh and was even making his family laugh in his final days. The family would like to express deepest gratitude for every caregiver at UAB and St. Vincent’s over the past few weeks. Their care and compassion was exemplary.
To honor his commitment to Jesus Christ as Savior, Michael’s Celebration of Life service will be conducted by Jim Alexander, Pastor at Briarwood Presbyterian Church chapel in Birmingham, Alabama on Thursday January 30, 2025 at 11:00 am.
