

Opal was born May 4, 1926 in Cullman County to Flora and Grady Hollis. She was one of seven brothers and sisters. She graduated from Cold Springs High School and married Houston Carlisle when he returned from service in World War II. Opal and Houston spent happy years as newlyweds at Auburn University as he earned his degree. They had three children: Hubert (Jan), Kathy (Jeff Wallace), and Barry (Dee Ann).
Opal was an accomplished homemaker. She grew and canned vegetables, sewed garments and drapery, quilted, and was an expert cook. A lifelong Baptist, she was a member of Lakeside Baptist Church, where she faithfully attended the Lambert Sunday School Class.
Opal is survived by six grandchildren: Michael Zekoff, Johnathan Carlisle, Jessica Carlisle, Mark Zekoff, Kevin Carlisle, and Alex Carlisle. She is also survived by her brother, Edwin Hollis. She had one great-granddaughter, Emma Cate, born to Lauren and Michael Zekoff.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Alabama. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, November 20, 2014 at Lakeside Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, and the graveside service Thursday will be at New Prospect Baptist Church Cemetery.
