Ray was born on April 27, 1928 to Nannie and Arthur Myers of Shawnee, Oklahoma. He was one of three children born to his parents, with a sister, Virginia, and a brother, Bill. Growing up during the Great Depression and World War II instilled in him a strong work ethic, but also love for our country. He enlisted in the Marine Corps, earned the rank of Corporal, and bravely served in combat in the Korean War.
Before Ray deployed to Korea, he married the love of his life, Ruth Hopkins, on February 13, 1950. Toward the end of his life, Ray enjoyed telling the story of how he met Ruth, describing her as the “prettiest girl at the dance.” Their happy union produced a daughter, Reanell, and a son, Steve.
Upon returning home from the war, Ray attended the University of Houston where he studied engineering. He entered into the corporate world, and his drive helped him climb the ranks in the international company, Princeton Packaging, to eventually run the North American division until his retirement.
Ray was a devout Christian. He served as a deacon at Green Valley Baptist Church in Birmingham where he attended regularly with his family. After the death of his wife, he attended Lakeside Baptist Church where he enjoyed being a member of his beloved Sunday School class.
Always an active person, Ray was an avid golfer, making sure to keep a pair of golf clubs in the back of his truck at all times. When he was able, he also loved to square dance.
Ray was preceded in death by his wife, father, mother, and brother. He is survived by his sister, Virginia Myers; his daughter, Reanell (Steve) Hamilton; his son, Steve Myers; his seven grandchildren, Allyson (Scott) Farnsworth, Kevin Hamilton, Kyle Hamilton, Michelle (John) Maple, Meagan (David) Hanson, Melanie Myers, and Matthew Myers; as well as eight great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
A celebration of life graveside service will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 14, 2023 at Southern Heritage Cemetery in Pelham, Alabama.
