

Mrs. Rheta Joyce Shortnacy Skelton, 82 years young went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, December 13, 2015. Rheta is preceeded in death by her husband, Fred T. Skelton Jr., her son, Fredrick T. Skelton III, and her daughter, Cynthia Marie Skelton. She is survived by her daughter, Loree J. Skelton; her son, Brian L. (Angel) Skelton Sr.; sister, Shirley Frost, brother, Joseph Shortnacy; grandchildren, Joshua (Elizabeth) Council, Bobby Skelton, Brian L. Skelton Jr., Taylor Madsen, Jade Skelton, and Freddy and Brian R. Skelton; and six great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Friday, December 18th at Southern Heritage Funeral Home from 12:00pm to 1:00pm with a Celebration of Life Service starting at 1:00pm, burial will follow at Southern Heritage Cemetery.
Rheta was a pioneer in the long term care industry caring for the elderly as she and her late husband built and operated one of the first businesses in Hoover, South Haven Nursing Home. She was also known and referred to affectionately as “Nan,” by so many people that loved her. Nan dedicated her life to caring for others, both professionally, and personally. She was a devoted servant to many charities, her favorite being the Birmingham Salvation Army. The family would welcome donations to the Salvation Army in her honor. She loved her Lord and Savior, and lived to love others. She gave generously of her heart, her soul and the gifts that God blessed her with, she shared bountifully with others. She always greeted everyone with her sweet smile and words of encouragement. Nan gave selflessly of herself to all that were blessed to know her.
