

Robert Mack Freeman, Jr., age 86, of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away on Sunday, April 12, 2026. Mack was born in San Diego, California, on January 27, 1940. He graduated from Falkville High School in Falkville, Alabama, and earned a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Auburn University.
Mack had a long and distinguished career in architecture. He spent 36 years with McCauley Associates, a prominent architecture firm in Birmingham, Alabama, where he served as President and CEO for 20 years prior to his retirement. Earlier in his career, he worked as an architect with Northington, Smith and Krannert and Aycock and Neville. Much of Mack’s design work focused on public schools, colleges, churches, and healthcare. His projects included the Eastside Upper Deck Expansion and Executive Suite addition at Jordan-Hare Stadium, as well as the James E. Martin Aquatic Center at Auburn University.
His professional affiliations included the American Institute of Architects (AIA), the Auburn Alumni Board, and the Executive Committee of Auburn University’s College of Architecture, Design and Construction. He was also a member of the Dean’s Club, Tigers Unlimited Jordan-Hare Club, and the George Petrie Society. In addition, he was active in Rotary International, the Birmingham Quarterback Club, and the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce Sports Committee. He was certified by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards and held architectural registration in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Kentucky.
Mack had a passion for skiing, golf, Auburn football, reading, and drawing. He and his wife, Jamie, traveled extensively throughout Europe, studying classic architecture. Their most recent trip was to Japan with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, where they toured many of Wright’s hotels and residential designs. Above all, Mack cherished his 65-year marriage to his wife, Jamie. Together, they built a life centered on family, shared interests, and a love of travel, architecture, and Auburn, a place that held special meaning for them and where they spent much of their time.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Mack Freeman, Sr., and Edith Payne Freeman.
He is survived by his wife, Jamie; his brother, Mark (Astrid); his sister, Jackie Nuby; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
Nieces and nephews include David Freeman (Miranda), Ariana Freeman, Alexandra Freeman Stewart (Kelton), Kim Nuby, Leslie Nuby (Mike), Les Nuby (Andrea), Judie Speer, and Cindy Parrott (Mike); great-nieces and great-nephews include Joseph Freeman, Ethan Freeman, Owen Freeman, Sarah Kirsten Witcher, Lori Boger (John), Julie Phillips (Joshua), Haley Parrott, Zachary Parrott (Scarlett), Gavin Parrott, and Nicholas Parrott; great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews include Bradly Boger, Mattie Boger, Kaleb Phillips, Asher Phillips, Mason Parrott, Kate Parrott, and Jordan Parrott.
A family graveside service will be held at Jones Family Cemetery in Falkville, Alabama, on Thursday, April 16, 2026. A memorial Celebration of Life will be held at Vestavia Hills Baptist Church in Vestavia Hills, Alabama, on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. Dr. Gary Furr and Dr. Eric Spivey will officiate.
