

He grew up in Montevallo where he developed his strong work ethic at a young age by helping with his parent’s store and attended Montevallo High School. He graduated a year early to honorably serve his country in WWII. Upon returning from the war, he attended and graduated from Alabama Polytechnic Institute, now Auburn University, with an electrical engineering degree. He remained a passionate Auburn fan throughout his life. He began his career at Cincinnati Gas and Electric Co. then joined The Alabama Power Co. in 1952 as an electrical engineer. As a charismatic leader with a tenacious spirit he became the Manager of Distribution where he was highly regarded by his peers and many National Electrical Engineering organizations. In addition to his career, he was a devoted family man known as Popie. He retired two weeks after the birth of his first grandchild and it was her and Bradford he credited for keeping him young and active. He loved to be of assistance to his family, who always came before his needs. Not a day passed that he did not offer his help to others. He believed in the importance of keeping his word and finding humor in every situation. Being a life long learner, he was an avid reader of The Wall Street Journal and follower of the stock market.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Jo Ann; his child, Vicki Page (Jack); his grandchildren, Katie Brakefield (Lacy) and Bradford Page; his great-grandson, Lacy; his sisters, Becky Estes (Richard), Laura Norris and sister-in-law Emily Hicks. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Laura Hicks and brother, Grady.
A graveside service in celebration of his life will be held at 11:45 a.m. on May 25, 2017 at Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo, with visitation following at his boyhood home, now the Fox and Pheasant Inn located at 540 Shelby Street, Montevallo.
