Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, December 22, 2016 at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham. A Celebration of Russell's Life and Legacy will be at 1 p.m. on Friday, December 23, 2016 at Ridout's Southern Heritage Chapel, Pelham, immediately followed by burial at Southern Heritage Cemetery, Pelham. Dr. Paul Moore will officiate.
Russell was born November 18, 1950 in Wedowee, Alabama. He graduated from Wedowee High School in 1968 and attended Southern Union College before obtaining his degree at the University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB).
Russell retired from UAB in 2000 after over 25 years of service to UAB's dialysis units. He continued his career in dialysis with Davita until his death. He was a much loved and respected leader in the care of dialysis patients at UAB and across Alabama.
Russell accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior at the age of 12. He grew to love his Savior at Mount Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Wedowee. He was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church of Pelham, where he had been active in mission trips to serve others.
Second to God, Russell loved his family more than anything. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Melissa Shelley Holloway. His children were his pride and joy. He is survived by his daughter, Amanda, and his son, David, and David's wife, Emily. Russell looked forward to meeting his first grandchild, William Oneal, in February 2017.
Russell also leaves behind his beloved parents, Joe and Lois Hollaway, and sister, Sandra Holloway, all of Wedowee. He is also survived by his in-laws, Oneal and Delane Shelley of Headland, Alabama; brothers-in-law, Steve (Margie) Shelley and Andy (Julie) Shelley; nieces, Anna and Sarah Shelley; and extended family of cousins and friends who he loved dearly.
The family would like to thank Dr. Lisle Nabell, Dr. Mehta, Dr. Victor Lin, and the other physicians, nurses, and staff on the Hematology and Oncology Unit at UAB for their loving care of Russell. Lastly, we'd like to thank Russell's physician and friend of 42 years, Dr. Ed Rutsky, for his care and support of not only Russell, but our family during this time.
