Tommy Edward Guy, 73, of Millbrook, Alabama, passed away on December 31, 2021, after an extended illness that began in late 2019. He was preceded in death by his wife, Annette Tanner Guy, and his parents, Eldred Guy and Ruth Mercer Guy. Tommy is survived by his children, Pamela Guy Greer (Craig), and David Guy; his grandchildren, Mary Katherine Ovesen (Kyle), Kaitlyn Guy, Annabelle May, Dylan Guy, Benjamin Greer, and his great-granddaughter, Mia Jane Ovesen; Annette’s children, Jeff Tanner (Alice), Angela Cantrell (Keith), and Robert Tanner (Amy), her 10 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren. Tommy was a Vietnam War Veteran and proudly served in the USAF from 1968-1974. He was the recipient of The Air Medal for meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flights that took place from November 1972 through June of 1973. In later years, he also served in the USAF Air National Guard. Like so many veterans of foreign wars, his return from Vietnam was not without challenges. His own experiences during and after the war later propelled him into a life dedicated to serving others. In 2001, Tommy received the degree of Master of Science in Clinical Counseling from Southern Christian University. He practiced as a counselor in various settings but serving disabled veterans and those suffering from chemical addictions was his true passion. He never stopped mourning the loss of his brothers in arms nor his desire to honor and serve them. Tommy was instrumental in the USAF honoring a flight crew that lost their lives during a reconnaissance flight mission in Vietnam. He was part of a flight crew that went out on similar missions. Originally, Tommy was supposed to have flown that day. In 2014, Tommy traveled to Goodfellow AFB in Texas as a keynote speaker for the memorialization and building dedication service for one of those fallen comrades. As a co-founder of Refuge International, Tommy supported and facilitated the establishment of a church in the small community of Jutiquile, Honduras. Refuge International is a ministry dedicated to supporting mission work primarily in Honduras. Through the years Tommy made a handful of personal visits to Honduras, and continuing until the time of his passing, he helped support numerous school students as well as two ministers in Jutiquile. Tommy was an active member of Coosada Baptist Church, and the Open Windows Sunday School Class. Although he was never able to deploy, Tommy received certification as an American Red Cross Disaster Spiritual Care Chaplain in 2019. He was also attending the Bible Training Center for Pastors and Leaders. Had he not fallen ill at the end of 2019, he would have graduated with his class in May of 2021. Tommy truly had a servant’s heart and lived that out every day. All services for Tommy will on Friday, January 7, 2022, at Coosada Baptist Church, 5687 Coosada Road, Coosada, Alabama. Visitation will begin at 10:30 am with a service beginning at 11:30 am. A graveside committal service with Military Honors will be at the Alabama National Cemetery, 3133 HWY 119, Montevallo, Alabama beginning promptly at 2:00 pm. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, please make memorial gifts to the Wounded Warrior Project, Refuge International, or the Coosada Baptist Church’s Great Commission Fund, which provides funds to support missions, missionaries, church planters, and individuals studying to serve in those areas.
