

He was born on February 28, 1946, in Augusta, Georgia to the late Thomas Liddon Sheridan and Hellen Ficquette Sheridan. Newell was a 1964 graduate of Waynesboro High School and later obtained his bachelor's and master's degree in music from the University of South Carolina. Newell proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1967 until 1971.
Newell was a gifted musician and played bass trombone for the Alabama Symphony Orchestra for 27 years. He was also the owner and operator of Sheridan Brass Instruments for over 15 years. He was a huge fan of the University of Alabama football team and a devoted member of Shades Crest Baptist Church. Throughout everything, Newell never lost his sense of humor.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Cynthia “Cyndi” Sheridan; his two daughters, Terri Sheridan Hawkins and Kimberly Sheridan Marvin (David); his grandchildren, Bradley Hawkins, Parker Hawkins, Colby Hawkins, Riley Hawkins, Jason Marvin (Shannon), Sydney Marvin, Joshua Marvin (Maggie), Jake Marvin, Anna Marvin Jeffers (Jacob), and Sarah Kate Marvin; his sister, Linda Sheridan Draggett; his brother, Milton Earl Sheridan (Margaret); his brother in law, Kerry Hughes (Jennifer); and his nephews, Mitchell Hughes (Rachel), Brent Hughes, Johnathan Draggett (Mimi), Tommy Draggett (Anna) and his father-in-law, Ret. Maj. Cleo C. Parker, Jr (Gail). He is also survived by many dear friends and fellow musicians.
Visitation will be held at Ridout’s Southern Heritage Funeral Home on Monday, November 6, 2023, from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm with a funeral service beginning at 2:00 pm. He will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo, Alabama.
The family requests memorials be made in Newell’s honor to Shades Crest Baptist Church, 452 Park Ave. Hoover, AL 35226.
