

She grew up on the family farm along with her four sisters. Their chores consisted of tasks such as working in the garden, taking care of pigs, goats, cows and chickens. As a family they attended Macedonia Baptist Church. Sara graduated from Vincent High School and furthered her education at Howard College in Birmingham, Alabama (Now Samford University). Soon after, she married William Aaron Smith of Pell City, Alabama. She assisted Aaron in his accounting firm and worked in the office at O.D. Duran Jr High school. She went back to school and obtained her teaching certificate, after which she taught in the English Department at O.D. Duran Jr High School in the St Clair County/Pell City School System. Aaron, Sara and family attended Pell City First Baptist Church, Aaron’s father being a founding member of the church. Sara served faithfully in several ministries which included pianist, library coordinator, church office secretary, Sunday School member/teacher and as an extremely dedicated member of the WMU Ministry (Women’s Missionary Union).
She is survived by her sisters Johnnie Golden and Sandra Wathen; children, Sharon Henderson (Keith); Leslie Smith (Hope Hamilton); Anita Bice (Steve); 6 grandchildren Blaine Henderson (Laurie), Carrie Henderson Barnes (Anthony), Travis Smith (Katelyn), Emily Smith Forsythe, Erin Bice Salter (Jeremy) and Dana Bice, 11 great grandchildren and numerous nieces/great nieces and nephews/great nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Aaron Smith; parents, John and Felba Garrett; sisters, Mary Smith and Catherine Olive.
A special thanks to friends, family, The Village at Cook Springs and Compassus Hospice who helped take care of her for these last few years. A most special thanks to Jan Sherard for her love and the friendship she shared with Sara.
The celebration service for Mrs. Smith will be held at Pell City First Baptist Church on Sunday, June 8, 2025. Visitation will begin at 1:00 pm with memorial service to follow at 2:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in her memory to the First Baptist Church’s Building Fund or to their Women’s Missionary Union.
