

Mr. Hyland, the son of the late C. Joseph and Grace (Benedict) Hyland, was born on Staten Island, N.Y. Sept. 19, 1936. He graduated with a BS in Commerce from Notre Dame University in 1957. A sportswriter for nearly 40 years, he worked for the Staten Island Advance; Perth Amboy (N.J.) Evening News; Bergen (N.J.) Record; Lynchburg (Va.) Times; and for 30 years, the Richmond News-Leader and Richmond Times Dispatch in Va. He retired in 1996 and moved to Staten Island to care for his aging mother. He lived in Pittsburgh, Pa. and Valencia before moving to Penn Yan in 2010, the birthplace of his father. Mr. Hyland was an active member of St. Michael’s Church in Penn Yan, where he was a lay reader at daily Mass and proofread the church bulletin. He also was a member of the Yates County Historical Society.
He is survived by his sons, Philip (Robin) Hyland of Valencia and Matthew Hyland of Pittsburgh; his former wife, Mary Jane Walsh of Basking Ridge, N.J.; his brothers, Stephen (Deborah) Hyland of Staten Island and Peter (Phyllis) Hyland of Denver, Colo. Also surviving are seven nieces and nephews, and four grandchildren: Grace, Hallie, Paul and Emilia.
Friends and family may call from 11am to 12:45pm on Monday, June 16th, 2014 at Townsend-Wood Funeral Chapel, 201 E. Elm St., Penn Yan, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated following visitation at 1pm at St. Michael’s Church, Liberty St., Penn Yan. Burial will follow at St. Michael’s Cemetery in Penn Yan.
