Barbara E. Hartbarger, lovingly known as “Nan,” age 87, passed away peacefully on May 24, 2026, surrounded by love. She was born in the hills of West Virginia on October 8, 1938, and lived a life rooted in faith, family, kindness, and quiet strength. She was the kind of woman who made people feel loved simply by being near her, whether through a warm meal, a thoughtful conversation, or the comfort of her presence.
Barbara was raised by her aunt and uncle but was one of twelve siblings. She learned early the values of hard work, perseverance, compassion, and caring for others. Those values stayed with her throughout her life and were reflected in the way she loved and cared for those around her.
Barbara found joy in life’s simple and meaningful moments. She loved working in her yard, planting flowers, and especially cherished her sunflowers, which stood tall and bright beneath the Florida sun. In earlier years, she enjoyed farming and was known for growing exceptionally large pumpkins. She was a phenomenal cook whose kitchen became a place of gathering, laughter, and love for family and friends.
A devoted Christian who loved God deeply, Barbara remained faithful throughout her life and found great comfort in her church, her faith, and her relationship with the Lord. She also loved her piano, a treasured piece in her home that held countless family photographs and memories close to her heart. A cherished framed image in her room displayed sunflowers alongside Psalm 118:24, “This is the day that the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it,” a reflection of the gratitude, joy, and faith that guided her life.
Barbara’s caring heart extended beyond her own family. She worked in the toddler class at the daycare center of Bellview Baptist Church, where she became known for her dependable spirit, gentle nature, and loving heart. Friends and coworkers remembered her as someone who could always be counted on, a woman known for her heart of gold.
On June 5, 1955, Barbara married James “Sonny” W. Hartbarger Sr. at Ferry Pass United Methodist Church in Pensacola, Florida.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, James “Sonny” W. Hartbarger Sr.; her children, Joyce E. Hudson and James “Jimmy” Wesley Hartbarger Jr.; her beloved grandson, Christopher D. Thronson; and many other cherished family members.
She leaves behind her daughter, Debbie Hartbarger Baker; her daughter-in-law Melissa Hartbarger, her grandchildren, Wesley A. Hartbarger (Melissa), Jamie E. Hartbarger-McGuirk (Sean), and Brandon L. Thronson; along with many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren who brought her tremendous joy.
Her family would especially like to recognize the extraordinary love, devotion, and compassionate care shown by Wesley A. Hartbarger and Melissa, who faithfully cared for Barbara with dignity, tenderness, and unwavering love.
Barbara will be remembered for her gentle spirit, strong faith, beautiful flowers, comforting meals, and the unconditional love she gave so freely. Like the sunflowers she adored, she always seemed to turn toward the light, and the love she planted in others will continue to bloom for generations to come.
A Celebration of Barbara’s Life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 06, 2026 at Bayview Fisher-Pou Chapel with Pastor David Craig officiating. Inurnment will follow at Bayview Memorial Park.
