Christine Walsh, 74, of Bagdad, Florida, passed away on October 21st in Denver, Colorado. Born on November 10, 1949, in San Diego, California, to Captain Leif and Natalie Tollefson, Christine was a passionate musician and dedicated wife, mother and community activist.
Music was at the heart of Christine’s life. From an early age, she demonstrated an extraordinary gift for the piano, which she nurtured throughout her life. She studied piano at Loyola University in New Orleans and at Florida State University, where she earned her Master’s in Piano Performance under the esteemed Edward Kilenyi. Music was not only a profession for Christine—it was a calling. Her deep connection to music was evident in every note she played, whether in the quiet of her home, in the sanctuary of church, or through the joy of teaching and mentoring young musicians.
Christine shared her talent generously with others. For years, she played the organ at St. Rose of Lima, where her musical gifts elevated the worship experience, inspiring both parishioners and fellow musicians alike. She also dedicated much of her time to supporting her daughter, Marisa, in her own musical journey. Christine served as her accompanist for countless lessons, competitions, and auditions, helping Marisa hone her skills and instilling in her a love for music that continues to resonate today. This nurturing influence extended to many others, as Christine often mentored students, providing encouragement and guidance to the next generation of musicians.
In the wake of the death of her beloved husband, Harry Walsh, Christine faced the challenges of raising her young children, Daniel and Marisa, with strength, grace, and unwavering love. She encouraged and supported her children in pursuing their dreams. Christine’s resilience and dedication to her children remain a testament to who she was as a person. She was always their biggest advocate, guiding them through the ups and downs of life, and providing them with the support and strength they needed to grow into the individuals they are today.
Christine was a respected advocate for historic and environmental preservation. Recognizing the community's potential for economic revitalization, Christine initiated planning efforts that included the formation of a citizen steering committee to address priorities such as public access to the waterfront, environmental protection, and economic development. As a founding member of the Blackwater River Foundation and the Bagdad Waterfronts Florida Partnership, she worked tirelessly to create a community that celebrates its rich history, unique character, and the future preservation of the Blackwater River. Her engagement during visioning sessions led to updated historic district regulations and the establishment of a conservation overlay district, highlighting the importance of citizen-based planning. After the partnership graduated from the program, Christine helped form a nonprofit organization to ensure the community’s vision continued to thrive, with Bagdad’s efforts now serving as a model across Florida.
Her tireless devotion directly led to the preservation of the Bagdad Mill Site Park, where she collaborated for many years with fellow community members to bring the park to fruition. When visiting the park, we are reminded of Christine’s unwavering commitment and passion for her
community.
Christine joins her mother, Natalie, father, Leif, and husband, Harry Walsh, in eternal rest. She is survived by her brothers, Dennis Tollefson and Michael Tollefson; her son Daniel Walsh; her daughter Marisa Walbert; and her grandson, Will Walbert.
A service will be held in her memory at the Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel, located at 21 N Palafox Street, Pensacola, FL 32502, on Wednesday, November 13th at 12:10 PM.
Christine’s legacy will continue to inspire the community she loved so deeply. In lieu of flowers please donate to ASPCA.
