She met the love of her life, Paul Shelton, at Myrtle Grove Baptist Church on a Sunday in March 1941. The young sailor stationed at Corry Field followed up on a rumor that pretty girls could be found at the church. An unusual set of circumstances allowed Paul and Eliza to skip prayer meeting on November 5, 1941, drive to Milton in a borrowed car with Vonda Perkins and Charles Stephens, interrupt Judge Johnson’s fishing, and elope in the Milton Courthouse. Eliza and Vonda were afraid to tell their parents, so they returned home. Later, rumors of the elopement reached the ears of the parents and the Navy. From this shaky beginning grew two strong and binding unions that last until Paul passed away in 1997.
