James Lee Gerdeman was born on November 22, 1941, in Deshler, Ohio to William and Mildred Gerdeman; he was the second of 10 children. In 1968, Jim was drafted into the infantry with the US Army, selected for OCS, and deployed to Vietnam as a Green Beret Special Forces officer with the 7th Special Forces Group. Upon his return home, Jim entered flight school and served a second tour as a pilot of UH-1 Iroquois helicopters. Jim completed his military career as a lieutenant colonel with US Army Civil Affairs. He graduated from Troy State University with a BS degree in social sciences. Jim went on to work at NAS Whiting Field for over 30 years as a helicopter maintenance supervisor before retiring in 2013.
Jim is survived by his wife of 58 years, Beverly Gerdeman, their four sons, Brian (Debra), Brett (Carie), Corey, and Troy, and six grandchildren.
Jim was a caring father who always placed his family before himself. He was very involved in his sons’ numerous activities, including coaching athletic teams and the Boys Scouts. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved camping, hunting, and fishing; he was also a sportsman who enjoyed bowling, softball, and golf. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, he will be greatly missed.
