Bach Mai was born in Vung Tau, Viet Nam on 3/21/1933 as the 4th child out of 7. She was a devout Roman Catholic, becoming a sister of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres (Dong Thanh Phaolo, 4 duong Cuong De Sai Gon) for 20 years from the age of 15 until 35. She did not meet her husband until she was 40 years old in 1974, who was the brother of one of the sisters from her convent. After the fall of Sai Gon in 1975, Bach Mai & her son made the dangerous journey to America by boat in April 1981 when an opportunity presented by her niece Thi An became available to leave Viet Nam immediately by boat; unfortunately her husband was not able to leave at the same time. After 9 days with no food and water, the boat Bach Mai, her son & her niece were on arrived in Bidong Island, Malaysia on Easter morning; luckily all 63 passengers survived. After staying at the refugee camp for 18 months, Bach Mai's younger brother Cong Quang bought Bach Mai & her son to Pennsylvania from Malaysia. After 5 years in Pennsylvania, Bach Mai & her son moved down south to Florida in 1987 to be closer to her niece Thi An's family in Pensacola, Florida.
Bach Mai was a member of the 3rd Order of Saint Dominic & Legion of Mary at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Catholic Church (Dong 3 Thanh Da Min & Hoi Legio Mariae tai Giao Xu Nu Vuong Cac Thanh Tu Dao) and attended Mass twice every day: morning Mass at Little Flower Catholic Church & evening Mass at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Catholic Church until her stroke in 2011.
