Patricia “Pat” Hendry Levy, 91, of Pensacola, FL, previously of Murphy, NC and Melbourne, FL, died Thursday, July 14, 2022 at The Veranda of Pensacola, her home for the past year and a half.
Pat was born in Atlanta, GA on August 27, 1930, the daughter of Warren Douglas Hendry, Jr and Lucille Whittington Hendry. She grew up in Arcola, LA with her mother, older brother (Dodo), and two older sisters (Betty and Lou), surrounded and supported by extended family. After graduating from Amite High School, she dreamed of studying fashion design in New Orleans (she had been designing and sewing her own clothes since the age of 12) but instead she attended Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, LA on a math scholarship. There she met and married the love of her life, Henry (Hank) Levy on July 22, 1949. They raised four children and shared 58 years of marriage while living in Biloxi, MS; El Paso, TX; Torrance, CA; and Melbourne (Eau Gallie), FL. They retired to their dream home in Murphy, NC in the early 1990s. She moved to Pensacola in February 2009 after Hank’s death.
She was a founding member of Ascension Catholic Church in Melbourne, FL. She was an active member of the Women’s Guild and the annual bazaar, founded the annual St. Patrick’s Day Dance, and was the Boy Scout den mother for her sons and Girl Scout leader for her daughters. Pat was an active member of the Hospital Service Guild, the ‘Gray Lady’ at Melbourne Central Catholic, and sang in the Ascension choir and the Community choir, all while chauffeuring her kids and their friends to the library, school functions, sports practices and events, and welcoming anyone and everyone into her home for food, time in the pool, lively conversations and hugs when they left. In her “spare time” she was a master seamstress, decoupager, crocheter/knitter, jewelry creator and taught herself numerous other arts and crafts. This love of art inspired her to attend Brevard Community College, where she earned her Associate of Arts Degree, and where she went on to teach arts and crafts to senior citizens for 10 years.
Upon Hank’s retirement, she became an active member of St. William’s Catholic Church in Murphy, serving a new community and making another set of lifelong friends. Arriving in Pensacola, she joined the Catholic Church of the Holy Spirit and enjoyed the Book Club, two Red Hat groups, the Bridge Club, and supported the St. Vincent DePaul Society.
Her love of people, her generosity, her smile and laughter, her thankfulness and her insatiable desire to help all, will be remembered by everyone, whose life she touched!
She was the matriarch of the Hendry and Levy families, as the last surviving member of her generation in both. She is survived by her children: Karen Levy Nuce, Atlanta, GA; Jane Levy Mead (Bill), Pensacola, FL; H. Nathan Levy, III (Marie), Baton Rouge, LA; Mark Douglas Levy (Angela), Naples, FL; and Johnnie Wimpee (Sophye), West Melbourne, FL; 9 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 12 nieces and nephews; numerous great nieces and nephews, all of whom loved and adored her.
The funeral mass will be held on August 13, 2022, at 1pm at The Catholic Church of the Holy Spirit, Pensacola, FL. A celebration of life in the Family Life Center will follow from 2-4pm. Entombment will be August 16, 2022, at the St. William Catholic Church Columbarium, Murphy, NC.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Society of St. Vincent DePaul, The Catholic Church of the Holy Spirit, 10650 Gulf Beach Hwy, Pensacola, FL 32507.
