Barbara S. Smith

Barbara S. Smith, age 91, of Peoria, passed away Tuesday Jan. 5, 2016 at 6:17 p.m. at the Richard L. Owens Hospice Home in Peoria. She was born Sep. 13, 1924 in Cleveland, OH to Theodore and Helen (Goodman) Schoenfeld. She married Louis P. Smith Oct. 24, 1948 in Peoria. He passed away Feb. 8, 1987 in Peoria. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Bette Taylor Johnson. Survivors include one son, Scott Smith of Peoria, one daughter, Martha (George) Lakner of Washington, D.C., and many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends. Barbara graduated from the University of Iowa, school of Journalism. She was a member of the sorority Sigma Delta Tau at Iowa. When the children were young, she was the editor of a small Jewish newspaper. She was member of the League of Women’s Voters, past president of the Sisterhood in Peoria, and a member of the Anshai Emeth Temple in Peoria. She also was a master gardener and worked on the committee to save and revitalize Springdale Cemetery. Funeral services will be Friday Jan. 8, 2016 at 1 p.m. at the Davison-Fulton Woodland Chapel in Peoria. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services. Burial will be in the Peoria Hebrew Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Planned Parenthood or the Alzheimer’s Association-Peoria chapter.
