Dorothy was born to Bertha and Harold Redenius on July 15, 1935 in Peoria. She married Robert (Bob) Berkel on October 1, 1955. He preceded her in death on March 5, 2007. Also preceding her in death were her parents and her dear grandson, Cory Haeny.
She is survived by her two daughters, Susie (Jude) Ney of Peoria and Sandy (Dave) Haeny of Savage, MN; four grandchildren, Jeremy Ney, Kelsey (Wade) Meeker, Marissa (Matt) Merrick, and Nicolas Haeny; a great-grandson, Ryan Meeker; two sisters, Shirley Dingledine and Eileen Cunningham and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Dorothy retired from State Farm after working many years as a secretary. She was a voracious reader of mystery and suspense novels. She loved telling jokes and laughing at herself. She thoroughly enjoyed vacationing with family. Always active at her church, she taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and was a tutor in an after school program. She loved attending Women’s Circle and conferences, and sang in the choir. Dorothy was also very active in her girls’ school organizations.
Visitation will be Sunday, July 31, 2022 from 5-7 pm. Funeral service will be at 10:30 am on Monday, August 1, 2022 with Pastor Lisa Dietrich officiating. Both will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Peoria. Burial will follow at Swan Lake Memory Gardens in Peoria. Davison-Fulton Woodland Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. Paul Lutheran Endowment Fund or First English Lutheran Foundation.
