Elmer was a dedicated family man and a wonderful man to work with during my time at Cat.  He taught me so much and managed to make me laugh all the time.  He will be grestly missed by many.  Prayers for you Elmer and for Vicky and the rest of your family!

Elmer Melton has walked the rose filled path that each of us must walk alone.  At the end of this path Elmer was welcomed home by our Heavenly Father to acquire his Angel Wings.  

Elmer Melton was a dedicated co-worker at Caterpillar.  He was spirited at times but always had a smile to share with his co-workers.  We know Elmer's family will sorely miss him and extend to the family our sympathy and prayers.  Rest In Peace Elmer!!!

He was great to work with in VV at Mossville Caterpillar during the 4 years I was a analyst.  Great friend.

I am deeply saddened by this news not just for myself but to his family I can only say that we must try and see this as a bittersweet moment as our dear friend / loved one is now free from pain and comfortably at rest.
I consider myself very fortunate and honored that God chose to place me in Elmer's path of life. Elmer, AKA Fudd, or E, as I and many others like to call him taught me so many things.  He was my mentor at Caterpillar and I was to learn everything  he knew; a very tall order that even as good and patient of a teacher he was he just had more knowledge than anyone could possibly learn as he kept learning new things all the time; he always liked a new challenge. I will be forever grateful for not just what he taught me about Caterpillar but, for the many life lessons and general wisdom he instilled in  me.
I will miss you E your silly twist of words and the funny sayings you came up with, those will be forever burned into my memory. 
I have a story I must tell as a tribute to my dear friend that I hope brings a smile to at least one person who reads this.
Day 1 of my training with E:  I was eager to learn as I heard stories about E of how smart he was but, I was also a bit intimidated as I also, heard he had high standards.  The first order of business was to go retrieve the daily mound of printed reports that had to be gone through.  We met and right away went to get coffee then, went for the reports; 1st things 1st (coffee) so I followed beside him as we went on our journey to paperwork land in the upstairs of building VV,  down a hall or two or three (you get the drift) then, upstairs stacked and endless amount of paperwork onto a dolly and returned back to his office area.
Day 2 E says: Hey Mikey (he always called me Mikey; I disliked that name but, coming from him it was different and didn't mind) how about going and getting the daily reports and bringing them back here while I finish this call.  Me being eager to please set out and feeling good that E trusted me to get the job done I took off in a flash.  Within minutes I flew through the maze of cubicles, by some offices, down a hallway or two only to find myself completely lost in this sea of offices and people. 
I finally came to the realization I had failed miserably at my little task and panic began to creep in.  I had no idea where I was or even how to get back to E's desk.  I ended up finding and exit door and went out it standing, waiting to see someone who could get me back to E's desk.  It didn't take long as everyone knew him.  It had been at least 45 minutes since I left for my 10 minute task.  So much for 1st impressions.  I was dreading the return as he must think I am a morron.  I arrived at his desk, head down no reports, no dolly of paperwork and E said  hey Mikey, where you been, where's todays reports ?  I told him my story, and he laughed out loud so hard I though he was going to tear up.  He was not laughing at me but along with me.  He then said "come along, lets go grab a coffee and we can go get the reports together."
That's the E I know.  We kept in touch after his retirement as we became good friends not just co-workers.
Heaven got a good one on July 27, 2016!

We met while attending Midstate College in the mid-to-late 70's.  He was always pleasant to be around and we had some good laughs.  We also met occasionally while working at Cat.  I was sad to see his notice in the paper.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of "Fudd". I have known Elmer for over 40 years. We worked together at Mossville, played racket Ball and oh yes even the Caterpillar bowling league. Our prayers and condolences are with the family at this time of need.

I have worked with Elmer since the 1980's.  He has been a great friend and an awesome co-worker.  He will be greatly missed.  My sympathy to his family which I know he loved so very much.  He talked about all of you so often at work.  Until later Elmer.

To Elmer's Family,

I am very sad to read of Elmer's Passing. I went to Plant Engineering in Basic Engines building BB in March 1976. I remember Elmer in Tool Design when we moved to building VV in 1979. Later I did the electrical design for a number of Elmer's improvements to the 3400 Engine assembly process. Elmer was great to work with because he had a clear understanding of what was needed to make the process better. I hope your many happy memories will help you get through this most difficult time. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I read that Nich and Christina live in Holt, MI. I grew up in Holt at 4457 North St. We moved there in 1946. I graduated from Holt High School on Aurelius Road in June 1959.  I left Holt in June 1963 for a job in the Caterpillar tractor Company's Research department after graduating from Michigan State University with an EE degree.

Deepest sympathy to the Melton family. Prayers for you during this difficult time. Elmer was a true friend and touched many lives in his 40 year career at CAT. He will truly be missed by his friends and coworkers. The only thing bigger than Elmer's smile was his heart, and he wore it on his sleeve.  He was a hard working man, honest, loyal and was always there to help out in any situation. He recently shared that the most important thing in life, and what has brought him the most joy, was his family.   Rest In Peace Fudd...till we meet again...Love you Brother.

Elmer was a great friend that I had the pleasure to work with for over 20 years. He and I would share a lot of memories of the good times during our careers working in the Planning Dept. at the Mossville Plant. He will always be remembered by the many people whose lives he touched.

Will miss Elmer, good friend for 12 years since I moved to East Peoria. Good person, very knowledgeable and a helpful person. Prayers going out to his family and friends. RIP Elmer, now you are pain free. God bless you and your family & friends!

Working with Fudd for so many years was always a pleasure. We worked together on many projects and he taught me a lot. We also bowled together for at least 20 years and meet up with him on vacation a couple times. We had a lot of fun and laughs over the years. He was more like the brother I never had than just a friend. Fudd will be forever be in our hearts. May God bless you and your family as we all remember Fudd in our hearts.
