Ernie was born to Albert Gray and Vira Willms on flag day and was later blessed by a stepfather, Ben Willms. He married Jayne Greenhood in Peoria in 1973. He is survived by his wife of 52 years and his three beloved children: Vicki (Steve) Scott, Tom (Suzy) Gray, and Steven (Faith) Gray. Additionally, he proudly leaves behind 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He loved every one of them very much.
He is survived by one brother, Gary Willms. He was preceded in death by his mother, father, stepfather, his brothers, Ron Gray and Mick Gray, and his sister, Sharon Moyers. His 'onry boy' stories of growing up in the 40s as a young teen with his siblings became family lore.
Throughout his life, Ernie was a hard worker, driving truck for Melvin Trucking, Triple EEE Express, and ANR Advance Transportation. Upon retirement from trucking, he went to work at ICC as a Truck Driver Instructor for three years and then worked for his son's company, Fleming Electric, until his 90th birthday.
His hobbies included golf, fishing, reading the Bible, spending time with family, and mowing. He was a devoted Christian, earning the handle of 'Rev' from fellow drivers. While at Mt. Olive Missionary Church, he taught Sunday School and worked with the youth group. Later in life and until his death, he was a regular attender of Bethany Baptist Church.
Ernie was a special man with a quick wit, making him a crowd favorite and fast friend to many. He was determined not to let his age slow him down, trying scooters, bikes, or whatever activity his grandkids were into.
His visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, from 5 to 7 PM at the Davison Fulton Woodland Chapel in Peoria. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 29, 2026, at 11 AM, with a visitation one hour prior to the service, also at Davison Fulton Woodland Chapel. Pastor Ritch Boerckel will officiate.
Memorial contributions may be made to Bethany Baptist Church.
