I just recently learned of Joe's passing and would like to send condolences to his family.  What a neat guy.  I knew him only in a business setting but enjoyed our encounters.

My heart goes out to all of Joe's family.  My sincere sympathy to his wife and son, his Father and Uncle John.  I was so saddened to read of his passing.  I will keep Joe and all of you in my thoughts and prayers.

Joe was a joy to know, and it is heartbreaking to know he is gone. All my thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

The Roman play write Platus remarked, 'Nothing but heaven itself is better than a friend who is a true friend'. Joe George was exactly that kind of divine friend to me and so many others. 
Although Joe was my friend when I think of him I only think of family. Joe, or Joey as he's called around here, boasted an impressive number of people connected to him by blood and marriage. But it isn't only his clan that evoked a sense of the familial around Joe. He seemed to make a family wherever he went because it wasn't enough to be close to Joe in a regular way. He was too magnetic, too charming, too electric and too engaging. He had an ability to attach to others wholly, to connect in an authentic and real way, to remember the key details that defined a person and keenly observe tiny disappointments or faults of character without criticism or judgement. He did so in way rarely found outside of immediate family. But Joe was so generous he could give that sort of support without hesitation to so many people. Joe had his work family, his Thomas More College family, his Jimmy's family, his devoted parents and the beloved family with Erin that revolved around their son Will. The way Joe knew people all the way made it so that his families all knew about each other. Joe's storytelling skill was without rival. He described the people he cared for in a way that showed how his ability to love unconditionally. And it revealed the unconditionally loving way he had been raised and loved by his mom and dad. 

It was this brand of love that characterized Joe's faith. He applied the same full force of his vivid imagination that he brought to telling a story to figure out his own rich path to god. It is interesting how Joe's faith shaped his relationship to time. So many people who knew and loved Joe have remembered him as someone who wisely recognized the precious and sacred quality of time. Kara Beer, a college friend, remembers how Joe reminded his friends to savor the end of senior year and how he stretched out his goodbyes for days. Joe told her that the Dean came out of her office that last day as he drove off to wave goodbye as he drove away and how appreciative he was for that last wave into the future. Joe's college roommate Tony Dowler described him as 'a handsome convivial guy who liked people and liked people to like him. he had a way of bringing a conversation down to earth with ribald humor and elevating it back up to the heights of The Iliad and Shakespeare'. The quality Tony associated with Joe was his unique awareness that paradise is fleeting. Joe treasured the fleetingness so much so that sometimes he needed to stretch a whole night of talking and laughing into morning. Joe's friend John Kelly remembered sneaking into the cafeteria to make eggs to order in the wee hours because whatever book they were discussing seemed like the most important conversation in human history. John said of Joe, 'He had a mischievous streak but not the destructive kind. He was innocent, playful, excited about everything, especially whatever huge book he was carrying around and was always, always unfailingly kind.' Derek Grimm noted that nobody appreciated a round of golf quite like Joe did. He talked about how he loved being outside and the rhythm of the game that felt like time out of time because golf had its own markers and wasn't obedient to the regular rules of the clock or calendar in just exactly the way Joe wasn't. Joe played with time to accommodate his appetite for that next great song to sing along to or the next wave of insight in what always seemed to be the most exciting discussion in the world. And he was right to be so appreciative of those fleeting moments. Those times with Joe were sacred. 

We are all filled with sorrow to lose Joe. But our loss is our own grief because I cannot think of a person more ready to acquaint himself with the population of heaven. Joe must have so many detailed questions ready for the long gone philosophers, saints, theologians, world leaders and his own dear mother. St. Thomas More offers us this in own time of loss and suffering at the passing of Frederick Joseph Joey Joe George most adored devoted son, cousin, nephew, friend, husband and, of course, father, 'Here bring your wounded hearts, tell your anguish. Earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot heal'.

Here's to drinking wine in ancient parks, daily trips to the Trevi fountain and chess games in New Hampshire.

Life at Thomas More College with Joe is full of great memories...Rome, chats in the cafeteria, hi jinks and shenanigans at the Rock, road trips, latin class, humanities, experiencing his family's hospitality...Joe George was a friend to all and part of a community of people that mourn his passing...God bless you Joe

Both my son and I enjoyed the friendly interactions we had day to day with Joe. We miss him and pray for God's abiding presence and comfort for his family.

Joe, you were the best. A true "Social Philosopher." Always with a kind word and a great story. One of a kind personality. Great photo album of Joe, if pictures are worth a 1,000 words, his are a million and Joe was one in a million.When I moved to Peoria 20 years ago, he served me my first beer at Jimmy's and we became fast friends.  Toasting one to you tonight, and there may be a tear or two in it. God must have needed a Philosopher/bartender. God bless pal, you will be missed.

Joe George was a wonderful man.  He was kind, gentle hearted, and truly listened to people.  Our hearts go out to Uncle Fred and his family.  We know this has been a devastating loss.

It was an honor and pleasure to know and work with Joe. If you go through life and get to work with someone as pleasant and fun as Joe, you are a very lucky person. I will always remember and miss him.

We are saddened to hear of the sudden loss of our cousin Joey. He was a genuinely nice guy. We will always remember him with good memories. Our thoughts and prayers go out to our cousin Fred.

So many fond memories of Joey George.  He could always make me laugh and his Mom and Dad treated me as if I was their own. Rest in Peace my friend.

I was fortunate to meet Joe and his lovely family at his November, 2004 wedding to my first cousin, Erin Garceau. I am so very sorry for the loss his family must endure, and will pray for everyone who loved him and are missing him. Please accept my sympathy.

Joe was one of the most unique individuals I have ever had the privilege of considering my friend. He had a keen intellect and could speak thoughtfully on almost any subject. He loved his family and treasured his friends. He will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with Joe's family.

The loss of Joey to those who knew him, loved him and worked with him will be overwhelming.  He had such a kind heart and smiled the most when talking about Will.  I have so many wonderful memories of Joey having worked with him for 20 years, and will hold those memories in my heart forever.  My prayers go out to Fred and Will and all his family as they mourn the loss of Joey and try to heal from the void he leaves in their hearts.

Glenn and I are devastated by the news of Joe's passing--our student and a great hearted, enthusiast for all things true and beautiful. We are stunned, saddened, and moved to prayer for his magnanimous soul. May Our Lord and Lady comfort his father, his wife and son, as they embrace him in the mercy of the Holy Family with St. Joseph as the psychopompos.

Joe was always a pleasure to work with, talk sports/philosophy/religion or just hang out with.  My prayers are with him and his family.

Joe had my respect as much as he did my affection.  I loved watching him observe an absurd situation with a bemused twinkle in his eye because I knew how much fun it was going to be to hear his observations later. As funny as he was in those situations he was never mean. He had a light touch and He was always a gentleman. He was A patient and kind man. God rest his soul
