Born in Alton, Illinois to Don Dickinson and Caroline Phillips Dickinson, Steve grew up roaming the familiar streets of the Alton area and perfecting his circle change-up pitch in any backyard willing to serve as a ballfield.
He graduated from Marquette High School in 1993, where he made lifelong friends. Steve went on to attend the University of Illinois, earning a degree in accounting in 1997—proof that yes, you can love numbers and sports equally. He then spent 28 faithful years in accounting at Caterpillar. Steve was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church of Peoria.
Before becoming a full-fledged Illini, Steve pitched for Marquette High School and Lewis & Clark Community College. A proud Kansas City Chiefs and St. Louis Cardinals fan, he approached cheering with the enthusiasm of someone who believed—deep down—that hollering at the television absolutely made a difference. Evenings and weekends were often spent either watching games on television or watching his children’s games and performances from the sidelines. And no matter the score, he considered being their dad his biggest win.
Steve is survived by his wife of 26 years, Lori (Smith) Dickinson, who was the love of his life, his teammate, and the person who could always make him smile even when the score wasn’t in his favor. Together they raised four incredible children—Payton, Hannah, Parker, and Blake—who were his greatest joy and the center of his world. He taught his kids kindness, love, how to celebrate even the tiniest wins — and, of course, how to throw a decent curveball.
Steve is also survived by his parents, Don Dickinson (Cheryl) and Caroline Phillips Dickinson; his brother, Michael Dickinson (Cindy), as well as six nephews, and one niece.
He was preceded in death by grandparents, including his beloved Grandma Marvel, with whom he shared a special bond and countless warm memories.
Steve will be missed most by his family and close friends. Steve knew the value of a good laugh, a great game, and the right team by his side. Family and friends were always at the top of his lineup, and his spirit will always be remembered.
A celebration of life will be held on December 12th from 4:00–8:00 p.m. at the American Legion Shelter (behind the main building) in Bartonville, IL. Friends and loved ones are invited to come share stories, smiles, and maybe a few lighthearted arguments about sports—just the way Steve would have wanted.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Stephen P Dickinson Memorial in care of Hometown Community Bank at 2311 W Pioneer Parkway, Peoria, IL 61615.
