

He was born June 19, 1930 in St. Louis, MO to Henry “Irv” and Elma (Bartels) Haupt. He married Joanne Poole Feb. 4, 1956 in Peoria. She survives along with three children: Carol (Kevin) Sears of Morton, IL, Donald (Mura) Haupt of Dunlap, IL, Ellen (Jeff) Severe of Highlands Ranch, CO, nine grandchildren: Charles Sears, Johanna Sears, Grace Sears, Alyssa (Jarrod) Luttjohann, Jason (Rachel) Haupt, Elizabeth Haupt, Laura Haupt, Scott Severe, Bailey Severe, and one sister, Dorothy Swoboda of Omaha, NE.
He received his Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering from Washington University St. Louis, MO, in 1952. He earned a Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering from Bradley University in 1965. He was a member of the engineering fraternities: Tau Beta Pi, Pi Tau Sigma, and Phi Kappa Phi.
Walter served in the United States Army from October 1953 to October 1955.
He was employed at Caterpillar, Inc. for 38 years, retiring in 1990. He worked in the Research and Development Dept, with his last position as Facility Manager at the Peoria Proving Ground.
Walt was a member of the University United Methodist Church and the Peoria Noon Optimist Club. He was an active member of Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Bradley University. He did volunteer work at Proctor Hospital, the Peoria Conventions and Visitor’s Bureau, Harrison School, and Look it’s My Book.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service will be Saturday Jan. 14, 2012 at 12:30 p.m. at the University United Methodist Church in Peoria. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until 12 Noon at the church. Davison-Fulton Woolsey-Wilton Funeral Home in Peoria is in charge of arrangements.
