He was born on April 15, 1958, in Kokomo, IN, to the late William “Bill” Sahm and Rita Louise Sahm. He married Lois Douglas on July 17, 1982, and she survives. He is also survived by his mother; son, Doug (Jacqueline) and their children, Luke and Summer; daughter, Dr. Michelle (Cutter) Duncan and their son Gatlin; son, Dan (Raylynn), who are expecting a child; and daughter, Allison Sahm.
He graduated from Purdue University earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering in 1980 and Master’s Degree in Engineering in 1981. He retired from a 34-year career with Caterpillar. He received numerous accolades throughout his career, held his Professional Engineer’s license, 13 patents, and he was inducted into the International Mining Hall of Fame.
He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, woodworking, coaching youth football and basketball, as well as judging the NASA Remote Mining Competition. He was a member and elder of Northminster Presbyterian Church, volunteer for the Midwest Food Bank, Loaves and Fish, American Cancer Society, Association of Therapy Dogs, and Canines for Christ.
Visitation will be held at Northminster Presbyterian Church on Sunday, June 13, 2021, from 4-7 PM. Funeral services will be held at the church on Monday, June 14, 2021, at 11 AM with Rev. Bob Jordan officiating. Graveside services will be held at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Flat Rock, IN on Tuesday, June 15, 2021, at 10:30 AM. Memorials may be made to Northminster Presbyterian Church or to Canines for Christ.
