Passed away peacefully surrounded with the love of her family on December 25, 2023 at the PRHC palliative wing in her 67th year. Carolyn was the beloved wife of Tom Childs and loving and devoted mother of Sebastian Kay. Dear sister of Jenniffer Kay (Vik Dhawan). Cherished daughter of the late Robert and Elva Kay (nee Hodgson). Will be forever remembered and loved by the Kay, Hodgson, Quann and Childs families.
Carolyn was a true wonder, with a big smile and laugh, full of light, love and with a beautiful spirit. Her kindness and generosity filled any room she was in. She had amazing fashion sense, wore great glasses, loved so many things including books, music, film, art, discussing current events, travelling - to Germany especially and totally loved Berlin. At one point even considering moving there with Tom after retirement. Carolyn was just an absolute joy to be around. A past member of the Peterborough Singers and the ReFrame Film Festival which like everything Carolyn did in life put her whole heart and soul into. A member of Hospice Peterborough’s Women's support group, Carolyn took great comfort in the sharing of personal journeys, support and the collegiality of this wonderful group of women.
She was adored and is tremendously missed by her family, friends and former students who she taught in a 32 year career at Trent University as Professor of Modern German History and Holocaust Studies, Principal of Lady Eaton College and the Chair of the History Department. Her door was always open to anyone that needed help, whether this was academic or personal. She cared and listened to everyone with unending kindness and compassion. Our world was made a much better and kinder place for having Carolyn in it and although we all miss her greatly we are all truly blessed to have known her.
A Memorial service will be held on Friday April 26, 2024 at 2:00pm at St John the Evangelist Anglican Church, 99 Brock Street, Peterborough. The service will also be live streamed on the church’s Facebook page. A reception to follow at Ashburnham Funeral Home 840 Armour Road from 4:00 – 6:00pm. Interment in St. Andrews Presbyterian Church cemetery, Scarborough at a later date.
Our family thanks the wonderful care Carolyn received from all the nurses and doctors who cared for her at home and in hospital especially Dr. Ismail Sharif and Dr. Chris Blake. In lieu of flowers if you wish to honour Carolyn’s memory her wishes were that donations be made to the Max Eisen lecture in Holocaust Studies at Trent University or Hospice Peterborough.
