Dear Isabel and Warren; I was so shocked when I heard of Duncan passing as were we all in the Dean's office at the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Alberta. Please accept our sincere condolences, and personally I will miss Duncan.  He was such an inspiration with boundless energy and devotion to standardization of metrics.  I hope that his work will yield fruit in the future. "

I wish to offer my sincere condolences to Isabel, Warren, Janet and the grandchildren on our loss of Duncan Bath.

With his exit from the scene we have lost a dedicated and vociferous proponent of what was stated in one of the eulogies, rationality, or as one might also say, evidence-based decisions.  He undoubtedly adhered steadfastly to this position in his professional career, with which I had no contact, but certainly did so in his activism at the local and national levels, which I shared.

I have forgotten just when I was first in contact with Dunc, but it was no later than about a quarter-century ago when he contacted me about a letter I had published in the Examiner mentioning the advantages of the International Dating System, which he strongly endorsed.  A few years later, in 1996, a letter from me was published in the Globe and Mail's Report on Business in which I advocated the use of this system of dating on cheque forms and urged banks to adopt it.  That this eventually occurred, quite recently, is without question due to its unrelenting and aggressive advocacy by Dunc, probably his greatest triumph in influencing public policies.

He also shared with me tireless advocacy of metric measurement, another and prominent example of adopting rational practices.  This is of course unfinished business whose completion has been put on hold largely owing to the influence in Canada of the arch-conservatism of the United States, the only important holdout.  It is going to take the efforts of at least another generation of many like-minded souls to see this conversion to completion.

The most recent subject of our mutual activism has been, of course, completion of The Parkway, and I had sent him while he, unknown to me, was enduring his final illness an E-mail regarding a submission in its support to the Ministry of the Environment.  Both of us had had letters published in the local media in support of this issue, and it a matter of great satisfaction to me that he lived to see completion of the “Medical Drive” section and the long overdue decision in November by City Council to proceed with completion of the remainder of The Parkway by 2031.  How he must have welcomed these developments and the vindication of his position!

My wife and I have been regular in attendance at the concerts of the Peterborough Symphony, and by good fortune Dunc and Isabel had seats in the balcony almost across the aisle.  During intermissions I usually had short chats with him in which we discussed matters of mutual interest, and in these and a few encounters elsewhere I always found his company pleasant and stimulating.  

We, like all his other friends and associates, will greatly miss him.  R.I.P.

Dear Isabel - are thinking of you in this sad time.  Duncan was a special man to many of us.  He shall be missed by all in the Meals on Wheels circle ...
and was admired for his common sense logic and skilfully written pieces regularly found on the editorial page of the Examiner.  May God bless you.

Dear Isobel-
We will certainly miss this guy. He was so enthusiastic and fun to have with us on Thursdays at the Holiday Inn Lunch Bunch. When the Parkway is completed, he will be smiling down with approval, having fought for it with dogged determination. And when date stamps on sales slips all have the Standard format he will be pleased. That was one of his favourite jousting matches with the powers that be. I have only had the pleasure of knowing him for about 8 years, but he certainly has been an inspiration. Please accept my deepest condolences.
