My deepest condolences to Heather’s family. She was a wonderful colleague and teacher. She will be greatly missed by our St. Peter staff and students. 

I’ll always remember you Heather. You were never my teacher but still make such an impact on me. You simply gave me your time. And I’ll never forget every moment.

Mrs. Downs was my teacher in high-school. And she was one of the first people who stood up for my rights. I was being bullied very badly at the time and she always had my back. 

At one point, I was assaulted in a particularly mean-spirited and vicious way before a school trip and only she stood up for me. I remember her calling my father at home after that and crying on the line as she tried to explain the situation in code, without upsetting me. She really, deeply cared. And I felt it. 

She made a difference in more lives than she knew and she made the most of her time here. I owe her so much. All my love to her and to the many friends, family members and students whose lives she enriched.  She remains one of a kind. 

Oi this is such surprising news. She was my high school teacher and quite sure she taught all my other four siblings at St. Thomas. Such a genuine person who treated you with respect and compassion. She would put effort into class and field trips and was a teacher that really enjoyed her students and job. So many high school memories involved her class or getaways I was able to join bc well she was flexible or the “cool teacher”. Life chats and encouragement  to apply to that university and give it my best.  Always very caring and approachable. A teacher and human that could connect with all people and make them feel validated and listened to. I am where I am today because of her influence and mentorship. Gone way to soon but never forgotten. Thanks for being a person in likely so many young lives that made such a difference. Not at the time likely feeling significant but looking back now 17-19 years ago it was all we really needed and more. Rest easy, promise to use less fossil fuels and teach my kids to respect the environment.  Until we meet again, Atheana Buckley

Mrs. Downs was my grade 9 geography teacher and even though we didn’t talk a lot outside of her class, she was such a nice and a wonderful teacher that you could always count on.  She was always there when you needed her and was always willing to help you if you needed something.  

Mrs. Downs was by far the most caring teacher I have ever had. She was so passionate about what she did and was truly dedicated to the success and well-being of her students. She will be greatly missed.

My prayers and thoughts are with Heather's family at this incredibly difficult time.
I had the pleasure of working with Heather at St. Peter's and being part of the Geography/History department.  She was loved by her students and they always spoke in glowing terms of her.  Heather loved teaching geography and her fieldtrips were a focal point of her classroom.  Taking the students to see the local glacial features was a highlight of semester. Heather was one of those teachers who was willing to share her resources with other teachers.  Sharing was what made her such an amazing teacher and colleague. 
It will be difficult not to walk into the workroom at the school and not see her.  Every time I came into the room our talks would usually move directly into politics.  Her passion about politics was intense and it made the workroom come alive.
She will be missed at the school by staff, students and friends . She was an amazing teacher.

I’m so shocked and heartbroken to learn this tragic news.
Sincerest condolences to the Forsyth family and especially to Mike❤️. In University days, I watched their special forever bond grow from infancy and it was always meant to be. These stories from other friends and students are heartwarming. While Heather’s life was too short, which I still can’t fully comprehend, the influence she has has on others - friends, families, her students and our planet even! Wow! A+ my friend. I love both you and Mike forever! 

Dear Michael, together with your mother Mrs. Audrey Downs, and all in your immediate and extended family, I am very sorry to learn Heather's life - journey has come to a sudden end. Very sorry to hear the news of Heathers passing, I remember going to help her clean her Horses stall at Milican mine road stables, and being able to see her horse and brush it, was a great time she will be missed, condolences to all her family. Russell Canfield..

Mrs Downs was my favourite teacher in high school. I loved her class in 9th grade and always visited her until I graduated. She was so friendly and always made me feel welcome. 



My heart is heavy to hear of Heather's passing.
I have a few fond memories of riding with heather at Sheriff creek pony club, along with sharing a few drinks at high school parties. My fondest most recent memory was the quality time we spent together sharing memories of her sister.

Heather was one of my first and favourite teachers. Entering high school for the first time, there were so many unknowns and anxiety about what would be next, but Mrs. Downs always had a smile on her face and had a true passion for teaching. She made going to class so easy because her energy was unmatched. A lot of friendships I still have to this day began in her classroom. Rest In Peace, Heather. Thank you for everything. Mike and family:  My deepest sympathy on the sudden loss of Heather.  I am an EA at St. Peter's and I had also worked and got to know Heather at Holy Cross and then reconnected at St. Peter's.  She was always so kind to me.  We chatted and sometimes complained together about things  and the way our world has become.  She was a wonderful teacher and cared so much for her students.  I never had the fortune to work in her room with students .  Heather will be remembered for her beautiful smile and genuine concern for all. Rest in peace my friend.  Loretto  (Coones)

I got the privilege of learning from Mrs. Downs, and she was nothing short of wonderful. Passionate about what she was teaching and it showed in her lessons, moreover she was incredibly kind. She made time for her students, and would always say hello and ask how you were doing. My condolences, she will be missed greatly. 

She was such a wonderful teacher who I’ll be forever grateful for. She was such a kind-hearted person who was always there for me when I had no friends at school. I could barely speak or understand English, and she was always willing to help me in any kind of way. She will certainly be missed. Sending warm hugs to her family and her loved ones.

Mrs. Downs taught me at St. Peter’s when I was in grade 9. She continued to have conversations with me in the halls throughout my education there and she would never a pass by without a smile and a hello. She was kind, caring, and patient with her students. I am saddened by this news. Greatest condolences to all that loved her. 

Where to start... the time my helmet got snagged on a branch while on a trail ride,  and I was hanging from a tree,  and you laughed so hard you nearly peed yourself.  Blasting heavy metal and doing donuts in the snow in empty parking lots.  Meeting at our lockers to discuss the days' intrigue. There was a time when we were inseparable, and in those days,  we dreamed of the future and our aspirations for adulthood. I've watched you over the years make that life and those dreams come true.  Your loving home with Mike,  your beautiful farm and your life-long animal companions. You had the life you dreamed of,  which makes it that much worse it was taken from you too soon,  too suddenly.  You've touched so many lives, and I will miss you.  Big hugs to Fred, Maxine, Paige and Mike. 

I worked with Heather at SSSS. She was a passionate teacher. We bonded over our love of horses. I'm deeply sadden at the loss of such a wonderful soul. Thinking of her loved ones at this difficult time.

Mrs. Downs was one of my favourite high school teachers. Not only did I enjoy her classes but she was understanding of me when I was going through a tough school year.  She would ask me seriously if I was doing okay and was worried about my well-being. She had a great sense of humour for teaching high school. Every time I saw her in the halls she would always talk to me and quite often we had longer conversations. She was the sweetest woman I will never forget her.

Her love of nature and animals was paramount to her. She will be greatly missed, but never forgotten. 

My heart is broken, I can't believe you're gone! From a love of horses to dogs, to politics and the environment, music and gardening.  You were my closest Cousin, my friend and a wealth of knowledge.  Every time I open my social media, I'm reminded of you. I've stopped myself more than once, ready to share a story or ask a question.  There was so much more to do, but you're not here anymore, I hope you're at peace. To Fred, Maxine, Paige, Chai, Layla and all the family, may your memories and strength together help you through this difficult process.  And Mike, my heart breaks for you!! I'm still in shock over her sudden passing. I'm not sure how to process it yet. It came out of nowhere. My thoughts are with Mike and her family at this tragic time. You've got your wings, Heather, now fly and explore new worlds, you will be greatly missed.
