As neighbors to Jim since 1972, we remember Jim's never-ending modifications, improvements and additions  to his house, garage, and shed.  Jim always had something going on, always did his own work, and he did it well. 
One memory I have of Jim was from a few years ago. I had helped him clean up a tree which had fallen on his deck (the only tool Jim didn't have, it seems, was a chainsaw).   When we were done, Jim insisted that he would buy me a steak. So off  we went to the KEG, starting a series of "steak dinners" over the next few years. We took turns paying and the dinners soon were reduced to coffee and dessert.  We had a great time telling each other stories, jokes,  and lies about our childhoods, our work experiences, our families. Our discussions were always interesting especially when Jim's views on politics and world events came up. Jim was always raring and ready to go on these excursions we had. I wish we had done more of them.  Good bye, good friend.

I remember from long ago , before your generation, a visit and overnight at Jim and Betty's. being woken up very early by a significant bang of metal on metal. Sneaking quietly outside and finding a good sized dent in our car, we realized Jim had left earlier and deduced that he had backed into our car. When he got home and was asked why he didn't come and tell us he said---" well you all were asleep, I really needed my coffee, and figured I would be back before you noticed the dent"". He didn't think it was a big deal. And he was ultimately right---he payed for the repair out of pocket, and no insurance companies were involved and no pictures were taken.
More recent memories come from our (Aunt Elinor and I) meetings with Jim and Betty in Tweed over the last 20 years or so. Jim would invariably have an outrageous (to us) take on recent news events, often political. Elinor and I were never sure if Jim believed what he was saying or if it was just a way to "rile us up". Either way it always resulted in a lively, argumentative but friendly discussion over lunch. Betty would often end the discussion with a dismissive--oohh Jim!!

I am so sorry to hear of your loss.  I remember a visit to the cottage with your family and Jim turned a mess we kids made of spilled peanuts into a hilarious game of pick up.

We are So sorry to hear about Jim’s death. Our thoughts  are with you and your boys, it is never easy to lose a parent and grandfather.

Dear Aunt Betty and Family:

I will always remember my Uncle Jim with a smile on his face. His warmth and affection filled your heart when he greeted you and I loved having him visit with me as a teenager over tea and toast. When I phoned him to tell him Pete and I were moving away to be closer to our kids, I told him I loved him. I think I caught him off guard because we always joked around growing up and never showed affection in that regard. But I needed to tell him how my heart felt. I am so glad I did. All of us loved our dear Uncle Jim. So kind to us all. With tears running down my cheeks over the memories and time gone by, it's now time to say the final good bye. Good Bye Uncle Jim and thanks for the many warm memories.
