Dear Joanne. I was so sorry to hear about John's passing. His bright smile and kind spirit will be missed by many.

I first met John just before he and my cousin Joanne were married. Their wedding was a fun time for a kid and I was blown away by John's big, smiling, gentle presence. It wasn't too long before he and Joanne moved to the newer area of the same street my family lived on. Our paths would cross from time to time and we were thrilled to be introduced to Julie, their first child. Later, John and I found ourselves working at the same Barrie broadcasting stations where his friendly manner meant he was very well liked. After John and Joanne moved to Peterborough, our paths would cross at family gatherings - most happy occasions, some sad. The last happy event was my father's 90th birthday celebration at Utopia. It was so good to see John and Joanne among the crowd. They so often made the effort to participate in our extended family's celebrations and I honour John for his laughter, his kindness and his warm, friendly presence in our lives.

We wanted to let Joanne and her family know that we were very saddened to hear that John had died earlier this week. I worked for John for 10 years and Pat and I consider those years some of the very best of our lives together. John was probably the world's greatest boss. He was an even-handed, even-tempered, decisive manager who always treated his employees as colleagues and friends. He was generous and considerate at all times. During our 10 years working very closely together, I can't recall a single occasion where he ever raised his voice in anger or frustration* (although I'm sure we often gave him cause to do so). However, John knew what he wanted and could get the best out of his employees with quiet firmness and without any bullying or hassling. A very unusual boss indeed! John was a generous person, always interested in our families and always trying to make our lives a little better and our jobs a little more enjoyable. Not long after we arrived in Peterborough in 1968, Pat and I got to know Joanne and her family on a personal level and, although we haven't seen them in recent years, we still consider them to be friends. In my experience, it is unlikely we will ever see another broadcasting manager (or any other kind of manager) to match John Manol. They broke the mold with John. He will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. *[O.K. Away from work, I did see him sort of lose his temper once when he threw his driver and his putter into the woods during a radio station golf event. Joanne I'm so sorry for your loss I know the last while has been difficult but you had each other John was a good friend and I enjoyed spending time with him on the EI Board of Referees or at lunch with friends! He will be missed!

Dear Joanne and Fam - Julie,Stephen, Chris and Tommy: We share in the sadness of John's passing. From delivering the Toronto Star to John's Mum and Dad and then being the Star's worst newspaper deliverer to you Joanne and John, it has been a joy to share this earth with John. I could always pick out his laugh in the midst of 100+ family at the lawns of Utopia. It was a joyous sound that invited all in, reflecting a great generosity of spirit. Sorry to hear of John's passing. I always enjoyed our conversations. Although we worked for supposedly competing media, John showed he believed local media could co-operate in projects for the betterment of the entire community.
