Passed peacefully at Golden Plough Lodge in Cobourg Feb 17, 2019 after a short illness in his 99th year.
Born in Cavan Ontario April 20, 1920, Mel spent his working life in the region eventually employed by the school district for many years until retiring. He married Jean (O’Neill) in 1979 on his birthday and they had many years together travelling as well as living in Cavan, Bobcaygeon and in BC. They finally landed in Cobourg to reside at the Palisade Gardens so as to be closer to family. For the past year Mel has been cared for at the Golden Plough.
Wherever Milburn went he was never far from his carving tools with which he practiced his art making walking sticks, unique carvings of his little people, ducks, wooden chains and so on. These he was very generous in sharing with family and friends alike. Examples of his craft can be found on shelves, in cabinets and leaning against walls in homes across Canada and throughout the world. Mel also spent many hours with the Cobourg Carving Club and the carving group at the Palisades.
Predeceased by his wife Jean in 2018, his sisters Bernice Larkin (Arthur), Pearl Tyler (Ralph), brother Emerson (Edith) and his nephew Rob, the kindest man we have known is mourned by all who knew him including his sister Mary Stinson (Conrad), nephew Rick Stinson (Karen) and family, stepsons: Pat (Jean), Michael and Herbert (Rina) Robey and their families. He will especially be missed by Marlene Tak (nee O’Donnell – his late wife’s niece, who formed a special bond with Mel over the past year. Mel looked forward to her visits and would mark the days since the last visit or anticipate the next. Nephew Rick Stinson was very supportive as well, stopping by almost daily to ensure all was well. All in all, Mel was rarely short of excellent company… surely a testament to his good nature.
We wish to recognize the kindness of the staff towards Milburn at the Golden Plough Lodge over the past year.
A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, March 8, at 1 p.m. at COMSTOCK-KAYE Life Celebration Centre, 356 Rubidge Street, Peterborough, with visitation from 11am to 12:45 p.m. Burial to follow at Rosemount Memorial Gardens. Online condolences can be made at www.comstockkaye.com
