After patiently managing the limitations of failing health, Roy Tyler Bowles passed away peacefully at PRHC at the age of 89.
He will be deeply missed by his devoted wife of 70 years, Devona; his children, Lamond Bowles (the late Chana), Meridee Bowles, Janet Goss (Robert) and the late Kenneth Lynn Bowles; his grandchildren, Valerie Beth Bullock (Brent, daughter Cora, son Bentley), Melanie Goss (son Jason), Kimberlie Sue Sullivan (Matt, son Max, daughter Sadie), Robert Joseph Goss, Daniel Roy Goss and Jacob Tyler Goss (Carley, daughter Trinitey). Roy was predeceased by his parents, Wilford Woodruff Bowles and Hazel Marie Tyler, as well as his siblings, Lee, Dick, Jean and Floyd.
Roy will be lovingly remembered by many friends and relatives in Canada and the United States.
Growing up on a farm in rural Idaho, Roy transitioned from the agrarian life to academia, earning a PhD in Sociology and dedicating many years as a professor and department chair at Trent University. His connection to the natural world remained strong through his love of gardening, and he cherished the tranquility and beauty of his home on Lake Katchewanooka with Devona, where they shared their love of wild creatures of all kinds. Roy was also a talented photographer, capturing the essence of plants and animals.
Roy's commitment to Devona, his family, and his community was unwavering. He contributed through his church service, creative pursuits, social life, research, and teaching, impacting many with his knowledge. He was involved with Habitat for Humanity.
In keeping with Roy's wishes, his funeral service will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 748 Cumberland Avenue, on Saturday, August 10, 2024, at 1:00 p.m., with a viewing at 12:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Lakefield Cemetery.
