I am the Zumba Gold instructor at Royal Gardens. I had the pleasure of being with Roy and his wife Devona each week for our Zumba Classes. He was very witty and shared many thoughtful and interesting stories with the residents and I. I truly miss Roy. My deepest sympathies to his wife Devona and his loving family. Jasmine Murray

We send our sincerest condolences with the passing of Roy.  He was a passionate educator,  family man, church supporter, and loved nature evidenced by his photography work.  He will be missed by his family, friends and all who knew him.

I am sorry to hear of Roy's passing. He arrived at Trent at the same time as my late husband John, September 1968, and my strongest memory is that Roy had a large number of computer generated punch cards connected with his research which made him sound very advanced technologically to someone who had just embraced an electric typewriter!! For the next 40 years or so John and Roy continued to work in tandem if not together and we met Roy and Devona from  time to time socially, on a number of enjoyable occasions. On one of these Roy showed is his vegetable garden where he had lined his raspberry patch with flattened corrugated cardboard boxes which I thought very strange at the time, but later realised it was a rather good idea!! Roy was very proud of his garden.
 It is sad to think that an era is coming to an end!

Roy was a kind and generous soul and when he established the endowed prize at Trent for Sociology students, I worked with him to establish the terms and honour his wishes. Years later, I would see him regularly when visiting my mother at Royal Gardens and we would have lovely conversations. He was a gifted photographer and a shot of a Lakefield barn is one of our favourites.

Roy was such a kind and generous colleague at Trent.  He was my first Chair when I joined the Sociology department in 1989, and always had time to chat and offer the benefit of his experience on everything from teaching to gardening.  Even after retirement, he continued to inspire our students through the research award established in his name.  Roy was a good soul, indeed, and will be well-remembered.

While I never met Roy, I do have the privilege of seeing his legacy live on at Trent through the Roy T Bowles Sociology Research Prize. This past year the prize went to a student who wrote an amazing thesis on accessibility in Trent. A thesis that the department plans to share with the university to implement changes to Trent's accessibility. Roy, your legacy lives on through the impacts of the award and your impact to us in the Sociology department. The department and I are saddened to hear of your loss and hope your family is able to find moments of peace.

Got to know Roy through mutual friends during the first of several faculty strikes at Trent.  He was a kind man, who always remembered you and greeted you with a smile.  Fond memories even though I did not know him all that well, condoleances to the family.

I am so saddened to hear of Roy's passing.  He was a wonderful mentor to me as I studied to become a sociologist and eventually a planner.  At Trent in the 70's Roy provided us with a solid, down to earth approach to the academic learnings.  But more important he was a kind and thoughtful person who really cared about people.

I only met Grandpa Roy once, when he came to Arizona to visit family.   My heart goes out to my stepdad LaMond, and my Aunt Janet for the loss of their father.   May he forever rest in peace.  He will be missed.

Roy reminded me of his mother in his kind ways. I looked up to him when I was young and I still do. He made an effort to stay close to the family even though he lived so far away. We're grateful for all the pictures he took of the family. My heart goes out to Devana and the rest of you. Sending love.

Sincere condolences to all of Roy’s family.  As neighbours on Young’s Point Road, it was always nice to be greeted by Roy’s smile and enthusiasm. He always took the time to stop and have a chat whether it was sharing the  photos he took or gladly giving away his overabundance of zucchini. He was a man who really seemed to care.
